Dr. Stephanie Evans
Using History & Cultural Identity to Succeed in Academe
"Concurrent Session"

Workshop Description:

The book Black Women in the Ivory Tower, 1850-1954: An Intellectual History provides an educational and intellectual history of an unrecognized population of academics in the past. First generation, low-income and underrepresented scholars soon realize that as we navigate the terrain of higher education, we must not go it alone. Mentoring and networking are proven tools for success; in her work Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans demonstrates that connecting to history and using cultural identity in one's scholarship can also help build a pipeline to the future.

Whether considering scholars from 50 years or 5 years ago, historical perspective of marginalized and little-known academics is vital to success for minority faculty. History and cultural identity provide context, inspiration, and strategies for achievement.

In this workshop, Dr. Evans (McNair, Cal State-Long Beach, class of 1999) will present examples from her own work and facilitate discussion on how emerging scholars can use history and culture as tools to provide context, inspiration, and strategies for achievement in any disciplinary environment.
