Illuminated Marco Summer Latin Program

Book of HourThe Marco Institute offers a Summer Latin program each year to help prepare graduate students who are working toward a Medieval Certificate for the Toronto MA or PhD Latin Examination.

In the summer of 2009, the Marco Institute offered non-credit graduate Latin courses at three levels.  The courses ran concurrently for eight weeks, from May 26 to July 24, with a one-week break from June 22 to 26.  More information about the 2010 Summer Latin Program will be available here in spring 2010.

Beginner/Review

A rigorous overview of *all* the major features of Latin morphology and most of Latin syntax.  Suitable for the energetic and committed beginner, or as a review for students of any level who want to brush up.  Students are responsible for obtaining their own copies of the textbook, Moreland and Fleischer’s Latin: An Intensive Course.

    * MWF 1:00-3:00 (instructor: Sarah Downey)

Intermediate readings in medieval Latin

Intended for students with at least one to two years of college Latin, or equivalent.  Covers distinctive features of medieval Latin in a variety of authors.  This course prepares graduate students to take the Toronto MA-level Latin exam.  Texts will be provided by the instructor.

    * MWF 10:00-12:00 (instructor: Nicole Hamonic)

Advanced readings in medieval Latin

Intended for students who have already passed the Toronto MA-level exam.  Covers a range of very difficult medieval Latin prose and poetry and prepares graduate students to take the Toronto PhD-level Latin exam.  Texts will be provided by the instructors.

    * TR 1:00-2:30 (instructors: May 18 – June 12, Sarah Downey; June 22 – July 17, Nicole Hamonic)

Students with previous Latin experience are invited to take both the beginner/review course and one of the readings courses.  Students may not take both readings courses.  Please be advised that all of these courses will require a substantial amount of preparation (4-5 hours) for each class session; particularly in the beginner class, students should have a minimum of other commitments.

Incoming graduate students are especially welcome, as these courses will provide an excellent opportunity to get to know UTK and the Marco community before the start of fall classes.  The Summer Latin courses are free of cost for Marco graduate students and Medieval Studies majors or minors.  For attendees who are not Marco graduate students or Medieval Studies majors or minors at UT, the program will cost $400.
