Illuminated Marco Summer Latin Program

Book of HourThe Marco Institute offers a Summer Latin program each year to help prepare graduate students who are working toward a Medieval Certificate for the Toronto MA Latin Examination.

This summer, three non-credit courses will be offered concurrently:

Beginner/Review

A rigorous overview of *all* the major features of Latin morphology and most of Latin syntax.  Suitable for the energetic and committed beginner, or as a review for students of any level who want to brush up.

  • MWF 1:00-3:00 (instructor: Dr. Sarah Downey)

Intermediate readings in medieval Latin

Intended for students with at least one to two years of college Latin, or equivalent.  Covers distinctive features of medieval Latin in a variety of authors.  This course prepares graduate students to take the Toronto MA-level Latin exam.

  • MTRF 10:30-12:00 (instructor: Dr. Anthony Adams)

Advanced readings in medieval Latin

Intended for students who have already passed, or are near passing, the Toronto MA-level exam, or who already have an extensive background in Latin.  Covers a range of very difficult medieval Latin prose and poetry and prepares graduate students to take the Toronto PhD-level Latin exam.

  • TR 1:00-3:00 (instructor: Dr. Sarah Downey)

The classes will run for eight weeks, from May 19 to July 11.

Students with previous Latin experience are invited to take both the beginner/review course and one of the readings courses.  Please be advised that all of these courses will require a substantial amount of preparation for each class session.

Incoming graduate students are especially welcome, as these courses will provide an excellent opportunity to get to know UTK and the Marco community before the start of fall classes.

To sign up, please contact Erin Read (eread1@utk.edu).  Questions about the classes themselves can be directed to Sarah Downey (sdowney@utk.edu).
