Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students is the pre-medical section of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). SNMA is a student-run organization that believes in culturally sensitive medical education and services, as well as in increasing the number of underrepresented minority health care professionals.

MAPS-UT Knoxville was founded by Reem Hussein and Alison Charruf in 2009, and the organization continues to represent the minority pre-health students on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus.

Our mission has been to make minority students with an interest in entering the health care professions become more competitive. We provide them with opportunities and a support group to achieve this goal. Thus, we offer volunteer opportunities, guest speakers, social events, leadership experience, and networking opportunities, among other things. Moreover, we try to focus our off-campus activities towards minority populations, so that members can become more culturally aware future practitioners, and because we know of the need for culturally competent volunteers in the health care sector.

We thank you for your interest in MAPS-UT Knoxville

and hope to hear back from you at mapms@utk.edu!
