Student Opinion Surveys

Week 1

What would have helped you learn more - or want to learn more - this past week?

1.      Waiting on technology to start working detracts from class time.

2.      Straight up lectures covering only material that we need to know for class. The class seems severely over-saturated with frivolity. All of us students have many things we can do with our time and bogging us down does not further our education in anyway. The amount of actual statistics work which was done in class the pass two days could have been condensed into a thirty minute lecture. The other three and a half hours spent in class were a waste of our time as scholars.

3.      I'm not sure.  Thanks for making the class more personal and enjoyable.

4.      It’s not you or the technology, it’s just the subject matter

5.      More examples that can be like the weekly exam questions.

6.      Really nothing....thanks!!

7.      More explanation of the slides, not going over them so quickly

8.      if we did some more examples of having to use the JMP software

9.      I think that you teach this class with lots of enthusiasm but sometimes it is hard to understand what is going on because you jump around with different programs so much.

10.   Working problems

11.   Clear lectures

12.   Perhaps a class activity would keep us more awake and alert during the lectures

13.   Nothing, between all the available modes of learning I could not have received more help. If a student is unable to do well in this environment it is no fault of the faculty.

14.   more actual examples

15.   I think more detailed slides would help.

16.   Well to me the class was good. At this point I don't have any suggestions for a better class. Just keep doing what you are doing. Your real funny and have a great personality.

17.   You have to much; twitter and blogs, office this, cyber that. We have grown up in the age of technology, our understanding of computers and modern tech is unpatrolled by other generations, but you are going over-board to the point it is confusing to understand where to look and find the necessary information. We just want a simply formatted class. The use of technology is great, and the effort for providing support appreciated, but we are needles in your very extravagant and unusually large haystack right now. Also, you are to brief when covering your slides. With most classes, it is obvious to what the teacher is trying to stress to their class, with you not so much. Place emphasis on the important units.  Let us know what is important. We are the blank page and all you are doing is drawing a straight line on it.

18.   I think if I properly used all of the tools at my disposal, I will gain a much better grasp of the information available.

19.   All the technology can be a bit overwhelming, but otherwise the course so far seems to be going well.

20.   Well we've only had 2 days of classes so far...I think I will learn just fine the way things are going once more information is added.

21.   I get confused with all the technology. Like there are 87 different websites we have to go to find things. Just put them all on Blackboard. Otherwise, I'm going to spend more time looking for the assignments than I am doing them! Also, the lecture did not help me.  I felt like you just put the slide up and didn't explain it or anything. I think it is going poorly so far!

22.   At this point, I do not feel I can accurately answer this question.  As of now, it is early in the class but you and your TA both have shown the drive to make yourselves and resources available to us as students.  However, I am apprehensive about the tests but having not taken one, I am basing that on pure speculation.

23.   I think that you have done a fairly good job up to this point.  I think I would like to continue to know what is going to be on the tests fair Tuesday and what to study for the tests.

24.   There is a little too much technology and too many groups and websites we are suppose to join. CourseCompass is very helpful!!

25.   No comment

26.   Helpful hints on what vocabulary is really important to know.

27.   More practice problems in class is all I need

28.   Just have one solid network to go to versus Ning, Google group, CourseCompass, etc... There are so many I do not know which one to go to or respond to, nor how to use them.

29.   n/a

30.   I really like the Star Trek analogies.  They are fun.  Stats can get kind of boring, but you are doing a very good job keeping it all upbeat.

31.   I like the way the class is being handled. I do not have any suggestions at this time.

32.   I can't remember what time it was when we had our break on Thursday, but it is a long class covering a lot of material. I know it would help me if we could have our ten minute break an hour into the class at 7 to help me pay attention better.

33.   I think an overall lesson to read before class starts so we can have a head up on what is expected to learn and be administered on the test.

34.   I was out of town for the first class period so I felt a little behind, but the course is set up such that I feel like I am back in the swing of things. The lightsaber is a sweet teaching tool.

35.   I learn pretty well from reading the text and listening to lectures, but long winded examples do nothing but confuse me. So, give more concise examples.

36.   Having the notes beside me as I do the homework on CourseCompass to understand how to put the notes to work

37.   Studying during the weekend rather than the night before this exam.

38.   None

39.   If everything was on just Blackboard it would be easier. Using several different websites and communication tools makes it difficult to organize one's studying methods.

40.   Maybe some group work.

41.   The blog notes are good and the notes posted from the class.

42.   Example problems for the class to work out to make sure that we are understanding the material correctly

43.   I thought everything went really well. Compared to my other classes, this one feels a lot more personal and there is more access to learn what you need to know.

44.   Practice quizzes and practice test questions.

45.   The only criticism that I have would be that the amount of options (blog, course compass, Ning etc) can be a little overwhelming. It would be nice to have all the class info and assignments in one place.

46.   Sometimes the lecture is hard to hear.

47.   A little bit more explanation about certain topics. If you had gone through the lecture along with the slide instead of skipping around a little bit, it would have helped me grasp the concepts a little bit better.

48.   I have actually been out of town and then sick so I was not able to attend class last week but I did not want to miss out of this grade! haha. I have been pleased with all the email updates etc, but there are almost too many accounts and websites in use for this class.

49.   It might have helped to go over several more problems than we did.

50.   There is nothing else that this past week has not provided that would help/make me learn more. I prefer PowerPoint point notes along with simultaneous lecturing to learn in every class. The online resources assist in extra clarification too.

51.   Nothing really.  I feel like sufficient resources are provided to allow the student to succeed in this course.

52.   I'm not sure, the classes went well.

53.   I like when we learn about real life applications to problems.  We have done some already, but I tend to retain the information when I can correlate it with a real life scenario.

54.   I hope we will be using the textbook more in the future.  It was very expensive and looks like a great resource so I wish it were a part of the curriculum.

55.   First i appreciate the openness of Dr. Leon and our TA Phil. You guys are so wonderful.  I cannot imagine doing this class without you. You are a blessing and I think you have it all figured out about anything to do with teaching.  So please keep it up. OK, maybe if you can provide a hand-out copy of what you teach for us to keep, that we’d be very nice.
Another thing we’d be to stop the lecture about 30 min. to time and encourage us to interact with you via asking questions relevant to what you just taught. Thanks.

56.   This past week was more of a review for me. I took a Statistics course last fall at UTC but the credit didn't transfer with the UTK curriculum. However, in general I love doing sample problems/work during class once we have learned something new.

57.   Lectures, CourseCompass, and textbook are good tools to help me learn more and save some times.

58.   My brain being wired differently! Ha ha. I just cannot seem to fully grasp the difference between categorical and quantitative, but I'll keep at it.

59.   Perhaps going through the text a little bit with examples.

60.   Nothing that I can think of. I believe you have made stats about as interesting as it can be.

61.   I find that class is very interesting most of the time.  It is very difficult to sit still and listen to lecture for two hours and Dr. Leon does a great job of keeping my attention.  I'm glad we have the weekly exams so I can keep track of what I'm learning.

62.   I wish we would go over problems from the book. I learn best when things are laid out and showed step by step.
