Student Opinion Surveys

What advice would you give a friend who is considering taking in the fall either Phil’s section of Stat 201 or mine that will be taught as we have done this summer? Assume that your friend is also considering another section of Stat 201 that will be taught as it is usually taught.

1.      Go to class and go to the exam review sessions

2.      I would fully recommend your sections to him or her.

3.      I would definitely tell them to take Phil's section. He is a great TA. For your section, I would advise them that they would have to teach themselves a little bit. And to expect the lecture to be difficult to follow.

4.      Go to the help sessions and do not be afraid to ask questions

5.      I would recommend that they take either Phil's section or Dr. Leon's section because the work load is not too much and the exams are reasonable.

6.      I would tell them to set time aside to study the book following the guidance of the blog.

7.      Take Dr. Leon's course. It will make your life a lot easier and a bit little more interesting as well.

8.      It depends on whether or not the test would be how they were in the summer, because 3 tests would be harder, but the 8 test that we did, were shorter and easier because of it.

9.      Do your homework and show up for tests.

10.   I would advise the friend to enroll in your or Phil's class.

11.   I would recommend either yours or Phil's over the others.

12.   I would suggest them to go to class and pay attention and study the material and when they need help to not be afraid to ask because asking questions really helps. I would also tell them to go to all the review sessions.

13.   I would tell my friend that the class is very hard but that having you as a teacher is a good idea.

14.   Honestly, I would recommend Phil's or the other. All the technology is not necessary. I've had 3 really good teachers at UTK. One used technology extensively, the other two did not. All of the extras are pointless because it simply comes down to how well a teacher can relay information and concepts. The class exams were made to be difficult, and they were because the course concepts were not effectively taught. Stats isn't the easiest class at UTK but its concepts are not as hard to learn as they were in this class. I have a friend who taught another stats class this summer. Talking with that friend for 5 mins at a time taught me more than the 2 hr classes I attended. This is why I stopped attending because the information was not being effectively relayed to me.

15.   Review the class blog and do the homework, that is a good way to get good grades

16.   I would advise them to take this class because he/she could learn so many different ways and both Dr. Leon and Phil are very helpful.

17.   Take Phil's.

18.   I would advise them to try and get into Phil's section.

19.   I would definitely suggest that my friend take Dr. Leon or Phil's section of Stats and stay away from the others. Both of ya'll do a great job teaching the material and make the students feel very comfortable voicing their concerns. There are benefits to the way both of ya'll teach. Phil's method of teaching is very simple and straight forward, Dr. Leon's is very direct, but having the information available to you online makes it that much easier to study and understand.

20.   I will certainly recommend it. A good course that is easy to learn yet demanding at the same time.

21.   Take one of your sections because they you both are more helpful and are patient when teaching this material to us. And the study tools are a big help.

22.   Read the notes on blackboard and go to the review sessions.

23.   I would highly recommend you or Phil.

24.   I don't know how it is usually taught, but if the friend were really into technology over taking notes in lecture, I would recommend this class.

25.   I would advise them to attend every class and to study the notes and blog very carefully.

26.   To buy the class materials early enough before the first class meeting. To even attempt to talk to the instructors about the course way before it starts. To be prepared to join class discussion groups early enough in all sessions offered.

27.   I would suggest Phil's section.  Phil connects well with the students and does a lot of work and has gotten to know a good number of names of the students.  At least mine.

28.   I would tell my friend to take Phil’s section because Phil can teach the material in an understanding way.

29.   Use the course blog and go to the study sessions before tests,  use CourseCompass to learn material

30.   I'd tell my friend to definitely take Phil or your Stats 201 section. I really feel like I have grasped the material in this class due to the comfortable and open setting and the great communication between the teacher and the class

31.   I would day definitely go to the review sessions before the exam.  They were so helpful and Phil did an excellent job recapping what was taught.  Without the review sessions, I would not have near the grade that I have now.  Also, that both the professor and TA and there to help you any day and any time.

32.   I would tell them if possible to try and take either one of your courses if it were possible for them

33.   I would recommend to my friend to take the other stat class if he or she is like me, and learns better with a simpler course structure without the use of so much technology.

34.   Take yours

35.   I would suggest taking either one of your courses because I benefited from what each you and Phil brought to the class. I would discourage taking it from another teacher because they could not put as much effort to allow the student to learn as the two of you do.

36.   Taking your sections will save time. The teaching style and technology tools make learning efficient.

37.   I would tell them to go for it-- that Stats is not as scary as they are probably thinking it is!  I would tell them it was a lot of fun, but I still say there needs to be a set incentive to get folks to come to the lectures.

38.   Go to the review sessions before each test.

39.   Read the book and ask questions. There are way too many sections in the book where they don't give detailed explanations.

40.   If you do not like slide shows or you do not learn well from slide show's do not take it.

41.   Take Phil's, he is super laid back, while keeping the focus on the work. Dr. Leon is just as good, I just don't care for all the nonsense of the star trek stuff.

42.   I would recommend Dr. Leon's or Phil’s sections over another instructor that I wasn’t familiar with. The class is much easier to understand because of the help offered.

43.   I would say take the class. I have learned a lot from Phil.

44.   You have been much more helpful in being there to learn the information, and you have given extra help to learn the information by practicing it. I took Stats 201 in the spring and had to retake it because I wanted a better grade. They were not near as helpful and didn’t go to any extent to help us learn the right way before a test.

45.   CourseCompass is invaluable

46.   Go to the review sessions

47.   I would suggest to my friend to take either Phil’s or Dr. Leon's section because it isn't your typical math class.  They offer a lot of help to make the grade you want and they don't try to trick you on the tests.  This class has been very straight forward.

48.   I would tell them to definitely take a class with Phil.  He made the material so much more accessible and condensed everything down so that you could actually use it.
