As a parting student write one or two paragraphs
relating your experience with Stat 201 this summer
as you would to your parents.

1.      The class was interesting, but the final was killer.

2.      In this class I learned a good amount of information about statistics; however, I did struggle with the final. I did well on all of the exams throughout the course and felt like I was learning a lot. I did well on the homework and thought that having weekly exams and homework was very helpful. I thought that the final had some questions that were like nothing we had been asked on past exams. I felt like in order to do well on the final I had to go back through all of CourseCompass and hope that I looked back over the question that was going to be asked.
It would have been extremely helpful to know that the previous exams were no help in preparing for the final and that in order to prepare for it I needed to look over all of the past homework. The teachers were very available and that was very helpful. The teachers really tried hard and provided a lot of information and technology that were a great help!

3.      This class really did help me to think in a different way, which was good.  I think this question is kind of weird and I don't really know how to go about answering it...

4.      The class was a lot of fun and kept my attention. It was somewhat demanding, but the teachers were very helpful. The technology in this course is the most helpful out of any course I have ever taken. I meet with the teachers before every test at Einstein's and it helps a lot. They have been very available all semester. I enjoyed the class greatly.

5.      My experience in statistics was love/hate. As a person, I'm definitely a fan of you. Unfortunately I had a terribly hard time understanding your lectures in general. It's the same way I feel about my parents and their teachings, but there's always room for improvement. Thanks for your kindness. If you make lectures more concise and provide fewer real world examples, it may make the course a bit easier to understand. It's harder to learn to apply information if you don't learn the information first.

6.      For the most part, I really enjoyed the class. Materials were presented clearly and the classes in general were fun. But at the same time, I think there was too much unclear information at the end of the class. Weekly exams are other thing that other departments should take into consideration when they schedule classes!

7.      I really enjoyed Stats class. Prof was funny-Star Trek/masks/light sabers! Course content-not as fun or easy, but not as hard as I thought it would be; would have been less hard/more fun, if I had stayed on top of everything, or if I had gone to the Prof/TA as soon as I got behind. Then I could have the fun w/o the stress. I kept thinking, I'll get caught up, but never did. They need to relay this to the class, somehow-if you get remotely behind, don't let shame keep you away; run to the TA/Prof; then you can have fun again." I also enjoyed the fallacies; copied them to my computer to look at them later & not forget them. I also appreciated the tech-CourseCompass, Blog, Lecture notes, but they should let us know that the tech is only great if you are on top of the concepts; by itself it don't help if you are lost-you must seek help or the tech just keeps you from drowning, not out of hot water. But I would still tell anyone to go for it-it was a great class!

8.      I hated stats sooooooooo much.  I could not understand anything Dr. León was saying and he drug out every explanation for like half an hour when Phil could do it in 30 seconds.  For the sake of next year’s students, just let Phil teach.

9.      This particular statistics class was an interesting experience.  I learned a lot, however some of the teaching techniques of goofing around during class time were a bit annoying because i was there to learn and get the class over with and not be delayed in getting through class due to joking around.  However some students might enjoy it. I would rather had a more formal classroom environment.

10.   My experience in Statistics 201 this summer can be related to my parents through the different varieties of studying I had at my finger tips. As parents, there are many things in this world that help you to get by such as how you go about paying taxes, how you choose to make smart decisions and so forth. Like my parents, I had to make intelligent choices on what was necessary for me to study and do well in Stats. Those things that helped me, I lived by, and those that were not of help were thrown to the wayside.

11.   I would say that my overall stat experience was ok. I really enjoyed the use of CourseCompass, and the blogs done by the TA. The review sessions before each test were very helpful because it was able to combine all the information in a clear and easy form.
I believe that the final was a little confusing, since it was made by the professor and all the other tests were made by the TA, so the format was unlike anything we were used to.
Some things I found distracting in class like the use of masks and toys, also during the final the professor was reading articles and doing stuff on his computer and it was showing on the screen and that was pretty distracting to have going on during the final.
Overall the class was ok, and you could tell the professor and the TA really did care about the students and their learning.

12.   Stat 201 was an alright class. I am not sure why I had to take the class but I had to. The teacher was a little strange but at times it was good. He helped lessen the long drawn out class time. The class could have been half as long and covered the same stuff if only we just did the work. The TA was great he actually got down to the meat of the class and that's all I really wanted was just to learn what I had to know not everything else. The testing on every Tuesday was better than once every three weeks.  I would have forgotten the information by the time the test would have came around. Truthfully, I actually learned some stuff if I retain the information or not that will be a different question. I feel like 97% of the information that I have learned to this point as a junior is lost already.

13.   This was a very interesting course at times it was easy and at times it was hard.  I think the most useful things were the weekly tests (which allowed you to not fall behind), the review sessions run by Phil before the exams (he is very good at explaining), and course compass which did a great job of explaining problems that you didn’t know how to do step by step.  The only thing that I struggled with occasionally was understanding professors León’s explanations and I think it was because he is used to teaching higher level classes where students already understand the concepts we were covering.

14.   Class was not that difficult even though the subject matter was. I liked the teacher and the TA. They made the class fun.  Weekly exams helped me understand things then and didn't have to worry about trying to remember stuff for less frequent exams.

15.   I enjoyed the class. For a class that was shorter than a normal semester class I felt like I kept up and learned a good amount. It would have been nice to have gone a bit slower to understand better some of the material.

16.   I'm not entirely sure what you mean by relating my experience as I would relate it to my parents but I did have a good experience with Stat 201. I am not as happy with my grades in this course and I wish I had put a greater effort towards studying for this course. However, I did learn a great deal from this class and I did find the lectures informative and entertaining (I'm a big fan of the lightsaber). I'm confident that I will take what I learned from this class and be able to apply it to my everyday professional and personal life.

17.   This Stats 202 class was not what I thought it was going to be. Dr. Leon has some very different ways of teaching. I felt like he gave too many options in ways to learn. Phil was great I learned a lot from him. I feel I would have learned more from Dr. Leon if he didn't go off on tangents about stuff other than stats.

18.   The weekly exams helped me a lot,  However I thought they counted to much towards our overall grade. I think the homework and projects should have counted for more. Dr. Leon has good ideas but I don’t think they can be all be used in the same class at the same time.

19.   I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this class this summer. I do not remember at any time this summer thinking to myself, "Why am I taking this class, or I do not like this class." The use of technology and weekly exams certainly made it easier for me to learn as a student. The laid-back atmosphere of the class was fun as well. While the class was demanding, we were given several learning tools along the way that made it possible. Thanks, and have a great rest of the summer.

20.   Overall, I thought this class was very good.  I actually enjoyed some of the material that we learned and it seemed fairly easy to me.  Phil was an excellent TA and he will be great teaching this class.  There were plenty of resources available to learn, and that was helpful enough that it wasn't even necessary to attend class.  Thanks for your willingness to help students learn, and your excitement for this subject.  It made this class much more enjoyable.

21.   I needed to have this course for my major, Business Administration, and was pleasantly surprised at the sophisticated level of technology being incorporated into the class. With that said, the pressure to "have fun" in class lacked direction, for absence of a better term, and thus became a deterrent to attendance, rather than keeping us there. Despite the vast disrespect of students not attending class, both Dr. Leon and Phil were extremely helpful and I personally have recommended two students to Phil's upcoming fall semester. Dr. Leon I felt had virtuous intentions, yet failed to capture the students respect and favor with his insistence on "fun".

22.   I had an overall pleasurable experience taking stats.  It was a class in which the professor provided vast amounts of materials to the students that made them fully capable of succeeding in the class.  I appreciated the way he made weekly exams.  This allowed you to focus on a few points at a time and really learn them.  At no point did i feel overwhelmed in the course, but I was definitely challenged.
Only downside to providing so many materials is that it makes class attendance almost optional.  It’s a catch 22 situation.  One question the professor will have to ask himself is if he is more concerned about class attendance or providing his students with the numerous platforms that allow them to succeed.  Personally, I would create in class quizzes that mainly checked for attendance.

23.   Stats 201: Most of the material seemed like just plugging in numbers to equations and learning which equations to use in certain situations, but it definitely helped me in the ways that I think. Stats 201 made us not just accept statistical information we hear, but to investigate. We learned that just because data is correlated, doesn't mean that it can explain a phenomenon. I now think about any variable that the creator of a statistic could have used to make the statistic look the way he or she wanted it to look.

24.   Statistics was a very hard course but my teacher and his TA made it bearable. I found the information to be somewhat interesting and I enjoyed the weekly exams because they made me stay on top of the material. The review sessions were crucial to doing well in the course and more example problems in class would have helped me learn faster. Overall it was a good class.

25.   I took Stat 201 this summer with Dr. Leon and Phil.  They were very excellent teachers and probably the most passionate professors I have ever had.  They had so many ways to contact them if you needed them and even gave out their cell phone numbers.  I thought over the stretch of the course, the exams were up to par but when it was time for the final we were not as prepared.  We had no idea what to expect for the final and there should have been more guidance on where to go.  I thought the course as a whole was ok, mainly because I’m not that into statistics.  But I appreciate what the teachers did for me in order to help me, so I thank them.

26.   My experience in Stats 201 had its ups and downs, but really the end of the semester really topped off the downs.  The good part of the semester was the review sessions from Phil.  His sessions really aided my learning process and were the only real learning tools I had all semester.  The use of technology also aided my learning experience as well as the blog.
I was very unsatisfied with the teaching of the professor.  Unfortunately his teaching style and my learning style did not mix and often times inhibited my experience.  I would not recommend taking this course other than for the use of technology.  I would recommend taking the course with his TA Phil rather than him because he relates to the students better and actually teaches what we have to know and answers the questions the way students want them to be answered. Overall, I was quite displeased with the performance of the professor but really enjoyed the work and dedication of the T.A. Phil.

27.   I did enjoy the class and meeting new friends. Stat was very time consuming for me but I was still able to make a good grade in the class. The final was definitely harder than I expected because we were told to study the weekly exams and the blogs which were mostly math. On the final, there were two math questions and the rest was comprehension and theories. I wasn't too pleased about that. Phil was a great TA and made class interesting and was very helpful before every weekly exam. The reviews were very helpful and I wish I had that opportunity for every class. Dr. Leon is very smart and a good professor.

28.   I would tell my parents that Stat 201 was a good class. It wasn't always the easiest to understand but it helped me understand that statistics are important because they can be used in everyday life to solve everyday problems. I would also tell my parents that statistics has enriched my knowledge and that I am a better student because I took this class.

29.   This summer we covered a lot of chapters with al ot of information that was hard to learn just by attending class. We had a lot of ways to study such as the class blog, CourseCompass, online lectures, and several others. Our teacher made sure that we had all the tools necessary to pass the class. It was at times really boring to sit in class, so i didn't stay for every lecture. But overall it was a good class and I learned a lot about reasoning and statistics.

30.   Statistics was a rather unique class. The class was essentially taught by two very different people. It was also overloaded with fluff in the form of technology. Both teachers worked very hard to make the class the best it could be. However, I feel their efforts went overboard and hindered the class instead of improving it.

31.   Stat was a good class this year.  Everything was made easy and I enjoyed both the TA and teacher.  I would recommend this class to other students.

32.   I would tell my parents that at the beginning of the course it was a lot easier to understand the concepts, but as the course went along, it became harder to understand everything.  Also, I would say that this course requires a lot of out of out of class studying time.  For me, statistics 201 was very challenging and it was very important to complete the homework assignments, projects, attend class, excel on the weekly exams, and try very hard on the final. The final was very hard for me, I had a hard time trying to explain the concepts.  I understood them in my head, but it was hard to write on paper in words that made sense.  I think it is very important to have done well on the weekly exams and the homework assignments, because when it comes to the final, you need the good grades to balance it out.

33.   It was an interesting class. All the technology available really helped out in the learning process because there was no end to the amount of help we could receive. Phil's review sessions before the weekly exams were a huge help. And Leon kept the class interesting.

34.   This class was probably one of the more rewarding classes of all that I've taken in my life: educationally as well as socially. I don't know if I'm ever going to use what I learned from the book ever again, but some other things I will remember… like all the masks and jokes(?) Dr. Leon made. Dr. Leon and Phil were probably one of the most available and helpful instructors I've come across in my life.

35.   The course wasn't hard initially. I had motivation because I needed a good grade to get approval for my major. After the first 3 weeks of class I lost motivation because I did not find the style of teaching to work with my style of learning.
The lectures were confusing to me; they were verbal and had few visual techniques. Concepts where made complex but with more studying I found they were simple. This seemed to be a trend. Easy material made hard. There were so many tools that it was hard to find what the best to focus on was. CourseCompass and the class blogs did work well.
Lastly, I wish I had taken the class with a teacher that fitted my personal learning style. Dr. Leon has passion, is nice, and tries hard, his class didn't suite me. I'll be lucky to make a C- and feel that I could have made a C+ to B+ in their classes. Also, I will have to let them know that I will probably have to find another career path now as I will more than likely not be getting into UTK's business school.

36.   I liked the class. I felt like a good portion of the material that I learned was useful in preparing me for a real job. However, the lecturer was very difficult to understand. He didn't relate to the class very well and was not an intricate part in my learning at all. His lecture time was not well spent in benefiting the students learning but more of a waste of half the class period. The TA, Phil, was by far the most help that I received in the class.

37.   Overall this course could have been extremely interesting. However, the textbook and examples used only pertain to business subjects; I'm an EEB (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) major and found this course kind of boring. It would be nice if there were a few biology-based examples and problems so that I can apply the information taught in the class to my major. The only reason that I took this class is that it is a requirement for a graduate level statistics class within my department that I will be taking in the fall.

38.   Stats has taught me a lot this summer. In this course I was shown that there are many ways to learn and not just narrowed down to lecture and the book. Technology really helps the class to be more interactive and allows more hands-on learning and practicing of what one has learned. It also allows one to see different ways a problem can be worked which helps visually to. I learned on many different levels during this course and will take that with me through the rest of my learning experiences.

39.   Statistics in many ways is like my parents. They both consume a lot of my time. As well as make me very frustrated at certain points too.  Even though they make me frustrated they are both just trying to help me get through life.  Statistics and my parents also try to help me make accurate decisions and not just jumping to conclusions
