Student Opinion Surveys
A.
On Monday
start the week with a 25-minute help session followed by a 25-minute exam on
what you learned the past week.
B.
On Wednesday
give an overview of what you should learn for that week, why it is important
and what the basic ideas are. This overview would include providing information
similar to that provided by the class blog now including clear directions as to
where to learn it such as where in the book it is found. Relevant CourseCompass
problems would be assigned to help you learn it. Note that some of the material
will not be covered in the lecture but instead you would be referred to the
book. However, for those who would like more traditional lectures an optional
online lecture would be offered covering what was omitted from the class
lectures.
C.
On Friday
start the class by answering questions, then working problems and finally going
over important real-world applications of what you have learned.
D.
Repeat
every week
Student Answers:
1. Seems like a good game plan to me 2. Sounds like a good schedule. The review
sessions are imperative because they offer time for the students to figure
out any concepts that they may be confused on. 3. This is exactly the problem with the
class now. Where in your lectures do you actually TEACH the material? You
just talk about how it is important. That doesn't matter to the students! We
just want to learn the material and be able to use it. We don't need to know
why. You should also put the help session and test on Friday. It would be
much fresher in the minds of the students than waiting a whole weekend in
between. 4. I feel that could work but you never
know till it is tried out, but be able to change schedule if it does not work
out. 5. I think that that would be a good way of organizing the class.
My only concern would be that 25 minutes would not always be enough for the
exams on Mondays depending upon the difficulty. I would also maybe find a way
to go over some of the questions on the exams after they have been graded. 6. Sounds like a good plan. 7. Sounds good 8. This is good. 9.
This format would be fine if the
schedule was actually followed and class time was used wisely. 10.
Sounds
great. 11.
It
sounds ok 12.
Sounds
like a good idea, simply because the more they have to think about the
material the more they will learn it and with all the help you’ll provide the
class should be a great class. 13.
I
really like that plan 14.
Some.
It’s a bad idea to not cover all the material in class that will be on your
exams. If we wanted to take online classes then we'd sign-up for them. A
problem for students is motivation. Out of class time is for studying
concepts learned in class and doing the hw assigned, not teaching ourselves new
concepts. This set-up is not considerate of a student’s other obligations.
The 3 to 4 other classes they take, the organizations they are involved with
on campus, etc. What one must realize is that over 90% of the students taking
Stat 201 are not stats majors. We don't care about the information provided
in this class because most of it will not be used. Evaluating data will and
can be useful to us. All the other information "learned" is not
going to be helpful unless we major in stats. In the upper level stats I
think your concepts are fine, you should make it harder on them, use the
terminology. This is an intro course and everyone that considers a teachers
reputation knows not to take Dr. Leon's class. 15.
This
suggestion looks great. I think the
assignment on Friday is a good way to help student to use terminology to work
out the real-world problems with statistics 16.
I think this would be a good idea
especially to help the students knowing the main objectives in the beginning
of class 17.
Good
idea 18.
I
like it the way it is. Don't fix something that ain't broke. This proposed
idea wouldn't be a bad trade though. 19.
I
think this would be a very good teaching method to use in the fall. I think
the students would also like this method. Everything seems to be very straight
forward and carefully planned and organized. I would make sure that the
expectations of the students are clear and having the use of technology would
not teach them everything but would only expand on what they are being
taught. 20.
Similar
to the way the summer classes have been going. I like it. It makes it easier
to learn material and be tested on it. 21.
Would
be an excellent way to teach the class because the students would know what
to expect each day and what to prepare for each week. I think this would be a
much more solid way to teach than the plain methods. 22.
I
think that that sounds perfect!! 23.
I
would not get rid of the class blog. It is a very useful tool. 24.
I
prefer the traditional lecture in the classroom. Class time should be spent
lecturing and teaching material rather than being told what you should learn. 25.
I
think this is a very good way to teach the class. Students tend to learn more
by working problems and then going over solutions to those problems so help
sessions are very useful 26.
Seems to me like what you have
said here is very, very intelligent and perfectly workable MWF. 27.
I
feel this type of schedule would be much more conducive to classes. Mondays could be a short day (depending on
the knowledge the students have), Wed and Fri would be more productive. 28.
I
like the exam every week because it makes it easier to understand and keep up
with the material. However, I think you should drop at least one exam! And I
love the review session!!!!!!!! 29.
Not
enough time spent on going over new material during the week! 30.
I
think this would help the class a lot 31.
I
would really enjoy this layout. The same every week approach is great for
students who like to schedule their time properly. Taking a test every week
can be daunting, but by the end of the semester the final will not be a
disaster. 32.
I think that sounds like an
excellent setup and would be very beneficial to one succeeding in that class. 33.
I
think this would be a good way to go about a regular semester class. But with
CourseCompass I think there should be more than 8-12 problems – let’s say 30.
BUT students should only have to do about 50% of the questions to get full
credit for the homework. This allows students who want more problems to help
them learn have that access but doesn't make students who already understand
the material do so many problems. 34.
I
think that sounds like a more reasonable way to teach statistics. Two hour
classes twice a week is tedious and, honestly, not very fun. I think breaking
the class up into shorter sessions is a wise decision. 35.
This
is a good idea. 36.
This
is a very good teaching plan that I think would allow students to learn a lot
in the classroom setting as well as through the homework. It allows for
teaching, review, and practice. 37.
I
think that an overview could be sent out via email before the Wednesday
class. I think it would be easier to learn if some of Friday's problems were
moved to Wednesday, so Friday would not be jam packed. 50 minutes is a long
time for an overview. 38.
It
sounds great, but again, I go back to what I said before--I don't think those
exams should be at the same time every week--folks just show up for that and
then leave and I hate that. :) 39.
I
think this would work best. I like the
idea of review sessions. 40.
I
think that's a great idea that would have worked better for me during this
class. 41.
That
sounds ok but we are starting to go on other days that would be hard to
adjust my schedule for on such a short notice. 42.
Sounds
great. 43.
The
teaching plan for a MWF class would allow for more time to help students,
make sure they understand the material (exam) and be sure that the students
understand the material in a way that they can apply it to real-world
scenarios. 44.
I
think it's a good idea. 45.
That
sounds excellent. I wish that my teacher would have done that for me last
spring, along with every other subject that I have to take. Working out the
information is critical in my opinion, the more we practice something, the
more we understand it and can use it for future material. 46.
I
like it. The real world applications part could possibly be really short, as
working out and answering problems is way more beneficial. 47.
Good,
good, good, so so. 48.
First,
I would consider not have the exams on Mondays, because I think you would have
better scores if they were on Wed. or Friday's. A lot of people might not study all weekend
for Monday, and end up cramming right before the day of. Also, I think some people who are not very
tech-savvy may not like the idea in an online lecture and will just end up
not listening to it. Also, if you
lecture exactly what will be tested in class, I think you will be able to get
the concepts across better because more people will come to class and if you
are sitting in the classroom, you are basically forced to learn it, instead
of having the choice to listen to it or not listen to it online. I like the idea of working out actual
examples in the class. Maybe that
could be included with the lecture to keep people focused. 49.
It
sounds much better. It looks like you
are really trying to connect with the students better.
