Student Opinion Surveys

Please contrast the way that we are teaching this summer to that used by other courses that you have taken at UT. In particular, discuss what you find better or worse about how Phil and I have taught this course.

1.      I think the course was taught well, Phil was extremely helpful with the before exam review sessions

2.      I find that you and Phil are more willing to put the extra time in to see that your students have the opportunity to exceed and fully understand the course concepts.

3.      The use of technology is really great. However, the lectures are not as in depth as I would like. I feel as though the material we are tested on and the homework material goes above and beyond what is taught in the lecture. Phil does a good job explaining material for the test.

4.      I like the Help sessions and the office hours. CourseCompass really helps too along with being able to talk to the TA

5.      I think that this class is taught better than a lot of the large lecture courses I have previously taken at UT. I think that having an exam every Tuesday would be really difficult on the students if it weren't for Phil and his study sessions. The study sessions are extremely helpful and Phil does a great job of covering everything that will be seen on the exam.

6.      It's been about the same as any other course I've taken...The only difference is the blog of what happened in class...I think it is a great addition

7.      Very different. Usually the TA is the entertaining one and the professor is the serious boring one. In this course, the professor makes the class fun while teaching and the TA is making sure that we are learning the material as well.

8.      I think that the teaching was very good, especially the different communication tools that we were able to use.

9.      The class is very messy in presentation. Way too much time is spent on "fluff." Each week we have a test that covers material that really only takes an hour of lecture to present. All the technology is really just for show as well. The class blog is nice; however, the TA should take a bit more time to prepare it because it is usually loaded with errors. Ning and all the Google group emails as well as the various other technologies setup are totally niche items done for the very few students who will use them. In a nut shell, people do not attend class to have fun. They go to learn. So, if you're just going waste two hours of time trying to entertain, then you're going to have low class attendance. No matter how fun you think class can be, it will never be as enjoyable as whatever activity a student would choose to do instead of class. My opinion would be to ditch all the fluff and shorten lectures to 30-45minutes where you just present necessary material.

10.   I though the class went well and the teaching was spot on.

11.   I like the blog it sums up what was important in class. I also like the fact that you both are available before the class at Einstein.

12.   I actually love the way you and Phil teach. It has really helped me to do better in the class. You all are very available to us when we need you.

13.   The class was great! It was very challenging though. I felt like I had to teach myself a lot because I didn't really understand the concepts in class. I am so glad Phil had the review because otherwise I would have been very confused.

14.   The technology is good, specifically CourseCompass and the class blog. There is too much of it really. The notes are awful, I understand they are used by the entire department but they truly serve us no purpose. When I did attend class and listened and tried, they still were of no help to me after class because they are so incomplete. I didn't attend class much after the first 3 weeks. I found no point in it as I couldn't retain the information. Teaching came off sporadic and was not very informative. Simple concepts, that I would later teach myself, where made to seem very complex. The job of a teacher is to break down a concept for their students, allowing the students to learn step by step. This class wasn't like this. There is a reason less than 10% of the class showed up every day.

15.   The TA and professor give students the confidence to success this course.

16.   I liked how you used various ways for people to further learn on their own and study the material. The technology used was very helpful. I really enjoyed Phil's blog because it told me the main points I needed to focus on for the exams.

17.   I thought feel has done a very good job especially in with the review session. That and CourseCompass are the only thing that helped. Everything else was pretty much a waste of time.

18.   I feel better about the teaching structures of this course as opposed to others because of the amount of internet resources available.

19.   I find that the use of technology has greatly benefited my ability to learn in this course. I feel like if I missed anything in class I could easily find it in all the available sources offered to us online. Having everything on Blackboard made it easy to find. Compared to other classes I have taken where very little or no extra course material was available to me online. I like the use of humor in the course. The study sessions offered by Phil were also very informing and definitely helped me with the exams.

20.   The teaching curriculum for this class has been much easier to follow than that of other classes. The class schedule is more consistent and the learning content is better.

21.   I find it better because you make yourselves more available to us if we have questions and you explain everything thoroughly so we can all understand it. You both take the time out of your days to make sure we all succeed and not many teachers are willing to do that.

22.   I find it very helpful that Phil teaches the help sessions before the exams and I appreciate how available you both are.

23.   You both are very involved teachers! And that is a very good thing.  Some of the technology may be useless it seems and may break the concentration that a student has if the technology does not flow smoothly.

24.   The blog, weekly review sessions, weekly exams, CourseCompass and having the PowerPoints online are great. Everything you need to do well in the class is online which makes attending lecture a little frustrating. In other classes, if I didn't attend lecture, I wouldn't do well in the course.

25.   I thought that some of the requirements of the course were a little unclear. However I did think that all the learning tools were quite helpful.

26.   You have done wonders. You have done your best compared to any other course.
Keep it up!

27.   Better: Use of the blog, study sessions before weekly exams.
Worse: Use of masks, pushing the Ning network when all students already have Facebook, over-reaching with technology (I thought the Twitter account would be fun, but I never saw anything worthwhile on their regarding class, I dropped his account a little over a week ago)

28.   I like Phil. He is the best thing that has ever happened to this course. He teaches everything you need to know in 30 min!

29.   Good study sessions before tests.

30.   It went very well

31.   I really feel more comfortable about asking questions in Stats 201 than most other business/math classes. I enjoy the constant communication through technology, frequent grading updates, and review sessions on Tuesdays. These are really helpful tools that I never see in most other classes.

32.   The thing I think I liked most about the course was the weekly exams.  Having an exam every week makes you keep up with the course so you will succeed.  I did not like the projects.  I thought at times they were useless to my potential success in the "real world."

33.   The availability to speak with both of you is very reassuring and helpful. The review sessions right before the exam are also a huge help. The hours before class to ask last minute questions about homework really help as well.

34.   I have found that I prefer less technology in the classroom. The amount used in this class was fairly overwhelming, so I chose to only use blackboard and CourseCompass to keep things simple. When there are more than three websites involved it just makes it more difficult for me to keep track of everything. I prefer it when professors take a more traditional route to teaching with less technology. I feel like the student-professor relationship is stronger when there is more face to face contact and less cyberspace interaction.

35.   N/A

36.   I find the lectures beneficial and in the case of having to miss it is convenient to have them to listen to online as well. I learned a lot from the class blog as well as by using CourseCompass. The most beneficial part for me was the review session before the Tuesday exams. I would also like other classes to post more things like a blog throughout a class that was very helpful in condensing the information.

37.   Most courses have review sessions a day or two before an exam, if they even have a review session. Having the review sessions minutes before the exam was extremely helpful.

38.   The only thing that comes to mind is that I feel so bad for you when folks don't come to class.  Since you do use technology so much, there needs to be something that will give incentive for students to come to the class. You could stagger the quizzes from Tues to Thurs, beginning of class to end of class and never let us know.  That way, folks will have to come to class and if you have this set up from the beginning then it doesn't seem like punishment, but rather, just your way of doing it.

39.   I believe that the use of the blog is really helpful.

40.   Most classes don't offer the amount of face time with instructors and TA's that I've encountered in this class. That's the most positive thing in my opinion.

41.   Well, I think that the use of technology was better than that of most teachers. However, the overall use of the technology was a little over-kill. Phil's help sessions were the best part. I prefer straight to the point old fashioned teaching. If you would have relied less on slide shows and just videotaped the class of you actually working problems on a board that would have been better for me.

42.   The use of technology far surpassed that any course I have taken here at UTK. The teachers were very understanding, while keeping their personal egos in check, always keeping the student first.

43.   The technology makes the class more convenient and easier to get help when needed by TA or instructor.

44.   The review sessions before the weekly exams help me a great deal. Most classes do not give review sessions, but the ones that do I tend to do better in.

45.   I like the weekly tests: They keeps other material refreshed and gives you an idea of what kind of knowledge you are expecting from us. I like the amount of effort you put into the homework: that helps a lot! And also, the class blog and trying to help keep things interesting.

46.   Methods of teaching are better because you include so many advances in technology.

47.   Way better,  more personalized

48.   I have had a good experience in this course for the most part.  I like how Dr. Leon is personable by showing the class his background etc. on the first day.  I have found it very helpful to get in touch with the TA very easily.  Phil will email me back the day that I send the email.  Also, the review sessions have been extremely helpful.  The extra "cram session" really helps me on the tests.

49.   I wish you had taken more time to interact with the students and go through the processes, especially JMP, instead of letting your extra technological elements do it.  In the past when I have taken stat classes, there was a very strong element of group work and class participation that is completely missing from this class and it think it hurt the class overall.
