ABSTRACT

The many advantages of having a course homepage will be discussed on the basis of real examples. Participants will learn how to created a course homepage using new easy-to-use authoring tools. Techniques for working with images, mathematical notation, and computer screen shots will be presented. When to use Adobe Acrobat portable documents instead of HTML will be discussed. Participants should know how to browse the World Wide Web but need no prior knowledge of homepage authoring.

TARGET POPULATION

Professionals who teach classes in academia or industry who would like to learn how to create, maintain, and use a course homepage. Participants must know how to use a PC with Windows 95 or a Mac for tasks such as word processing. They must have access to the World Wide Web and be conformable browsing it, but no prior knowledge of homepage authoring is assumed.

Background of Ramón V. León:

Since 1991, Dr. León has been an associate professor of statistics in the Department of Statistics, College of Business Administration, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is also an associate of the Management Development Center (MDC) of UT''s College of Business Administration. This organization provides business with consulting services and executive and professional education.

Before coming to the University of Tennessee, he worked at Bell Laboratories from 1981 to 1991 then part of AT&T and now part of Lucent Technologies. In his last management position there, he was responsible for consulting, training, and research in robust product and process design (Taguchi Methods), statistical process control, and statistical experimental design. Before that he headed a group with similar responsibilities but in the area of reliability engineering.

Dr. Leon is the chair of the Department of Statistics's Technology Committee and a member of the counterpart committee of the College of Business Administration. In this capacity he helps set technological direction for the Department of Statistics and the College of Business Administration.

Dr. Leon is the webmaster for the ASA Quality and Productivity Section (http://funnelweb.utcc.utk.edu/~asaqp/).

He has a grant for exploring the uses of course homepage to make classroom instruction more effective. The course homepage for his course: "Statistical Reliability" (http://funnelweb.utcc.utk.edu/~leon/rel/ ) illustrates how he has been using course homepages.

INSTRUCTOR EQUIPMENT

A PowerMac and a PC with Windows 95 loaded both with modems. A projector to project directly onto a screen from these computers. A telephone line to contact a local Interment provider or long distance to the University of Tennessee.

HANDOUTS

Short handouts will be provided. All material presented in the course (and much more) will be available on a homepage created specially to support participants in creating course homepages once they get back home. Links to many resources will be provided. Several how-to tutorial will be created by the instructors for this homepage.
