About Lambda Student Union

The Lambda Student Union was founded to provide a means of communication between lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, questioning, intersex, and allied students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. We serve the area through various educational programs, social activities, and political actions, in hopes to increase public awareness, tolerance, and support for the queer community. We are open to all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, biological sex, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, socioeconomic status or political affiliation.

Lambda has general purpose meetings every Monday night at 6 p.m. in the University Center, Room 227. These meetings are used to introduce new topics for the organization to discuss and provide reports on the progress of individual committees. Meetings usually last an hour and everyone is encourage to attend.

Be sure to check out our Facebook and follow us on Twitter!

Frequently asked questions:
Who is allowed to be a member of Lambda Student Union?
Anyone student is allowed to be a member: undergraduate or graduate, LGBTQ or ally! To be a voting member, you must attend at least half of our weekly meetings and be on a planning team for at least one event per semester.

So I can join even though I'm a cis-gender, straight ally?
Yes, absolutely! Anyone and everyone is welcomed!

Where can I find a list of gender neutral/family restrooms?
See section below! If there is another restroom that we haven't found yet, e-mail us at lambda@utk.edu and we'll add to it. We'll be creating a map soon!

I'm bisexual. Will I fit in in Lambda?
Definitely. We are a very diverse group of people and welcome you, regardless of your sexuality. We acknowledge that people often feel excluded or exiled when they are bisexual and are in a straight relationship. We strive to prevent that from happening and to not invalidate anyone's sexuality.

How can I join?
Just attend one of our weekly meetings! The dates, location, and times are all listed under the 'Events' tab.

Does it cost anything to join Lambda Student Union?
No, there are no dues to be a member of Lambda Student Union. We do, however, attend many social events together, such as bowling, dinner, movies, ice cream, sports games, etc. If you are interested in attending these get-togethers, it may cost a little bit of money. Many members are on a low budget and would be willing to split, so don't let that keep you away! We try to do events that cost as little as possible. All of our events that we plan are free and open to the public.

There's a really cool program I would like to see at UT. What should I do?
Talk to our Events Coordinator or one of our Executive Board members! Lambda is open to doing any sort of programming. If the program costs a substantial amount of money, we can apply to get funding in March/April for the following academic year. If it's not too expensive, we may have enough funding to make it happen right away! Don't hesitate to bring your ideas up in meeting!
