The Kappa Chi Chapter has been very active in implementing its own unique progrms on The University of Tennessee campus that serve as vehicles to serve the campus community and enhance student life.
Each year, the chapter holds a Sigma Week, a week full of activities and events which enables it to showcase to the campus what Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is all about on an exclusive basis. While our chapter programs grow and change as new, creative, and innovative brothers come into the fold,
Some of these chapter programs have included:
Miss Phi Beta Sigma Scholarship Pageant
It's time for a new kind of pageant. The chapter is currently seeking talented and intelligent young women of talent and poise to participate in its Inaugural scholarship pageant. A grand scholarship prize will be awarded to the victor as well as other valuable prizes for the other contestants. The winner will advance to compete on the Regional and possibly, National level. For more information, contact Bro. Tierney Bates at tbates@utk.edu
The Lovers' Groove
In the Spring of 2005, the Kappa Chi Chapter held its first annual Sigma Ball: "The Lovers' Groove" at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. A semi-formal occasion that has experienced great attendance, the Sigma Ball has quickly become a popular and highly anticipated event for UT students.
Bigger and Better Business Expo
Started in the Spring of 2005, the Bigger and Better Business Expo seeks to bridge the gap between the campus community and minority business/ entrepreneurs in the Knoxville community. Business owners and vendors set up display tables with information and items for give-away. Sponsors have included Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Knoxville Supplier Diversity, Visionary Solutions, MetroPulse, and many others. If you have a business that would like to be a part of the next Bigger and Better Business Expo, contact us at kappachi@utk.edu
Hip-Hop Showcase
Students that were at UT from 2002-2004 remember classic moments of Freestyle Thursdays that used to be held at Hess Hall. A strong part of that movement was lead by brothers Justin Levy and Rickey Payne. With Sigma Week 2005 and 2006, the chapter capitalized on its members love of Hip-hop and brought this popular event back to the campus, comprised of freestyle battles and live performances by talent rap talents. Proceeds from Hip-hop Showcase were donated to the Love Kitchen.
Sunday Dinners
Each semester, the chapter holds at least one Sunday dinner at The Black Cultural Center to provide students with a home cooked meal.
Tailgates at the BCC
During football season, the chapter hosts a tailgate with free food for students and visitors at the Black Cultural Center. This year, the tailgate will be hosted on Otober 21st (UT vs. Alabama) with Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.
The Black Freshman Experience
What do wish someone had told you before you started college? In Fall 2006, the Kappa Chi Chapter will introduce a new signature program to the incoming freshman students. The Black Freshman Experience will be a raw, un-cut, down to earth, interactive, insightful, and entertaining look at the first year of college from those that have been there and done that. The chapter hopes to give students a heads up in order to help them avoid the pitfalls that many students face during the first year of school.
Intramurals
The chapter participates in football and basketball intramural teams as another outlet of building brotherhood , fellowship, and fun.
Step Team
Kappa Chi
has a talented and skilled group of brothers that comprise its step team. The step team participates in exhibitions and step shows on and off campus. The chapter hopes to be very competitive this year.
Boys and Girls Club
The chapter participates in regular community service with the Walter P. Taylor Boys and Girls Club. If you would like to volunteer with us, please e-mail us at kappachi@utk.edu.
