In many different cultures there is a story of a group of animals who leave their owners to avoid being killed, and who work together to drive away intruders and make a new home for themselves. These tails come from such countries as Germany, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Russia and Slovenia, to name a few.(1)
Of these tails The Bremen Town Musicians is probably the best known. This site displays an annotated version of the tale published by the Brothers Grimm in Children's and Household Tales in 1857. This version was obtained from the site Animals in Exile by D.L. Ashliman(2). This is an attempt to explain some of the meaning behind the amusing story of this band of animals. |
