Notes from Breakout Group
Group Member - Richard Grippo, Arkansas State University
Already in Place
1. SAPOZEO Website
- use contents/systems developed from Group 1 to reorganize or add to current website
2. Members on Development Teams
- Pat Mulholland (Hydroecology Subcommittee)
- Amy Ward (Higher Education Subcommittee)
- make sure the above persons know what elements each of our individual organizations/institutions contain that will be attractive to NEON
3. Established history of Organizational Workshops
- be sure to document on SAPOZEO Website
- stress that workshops were supported by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee (others in the future?) to show that we are not just expecting the NSF to Afoot the entire bill@ but we in fact have the backing and support of regional institutions.
4. Affiliation with COREO - allows focused communication with NEON
To Be Developed
- both bottom up and top down approaches
1. Organization at home institutions
- form a Awork group@ to encourage NEON/SAPOZEO affiliation
2. Begin legislative awareness
- contact and/or visit with federal legislators representing each home institutions district or state. This should be coordinated with institutional advancement person(s) to promote a unified effort. Depending on the legislator, a short PowerPoint presentation (leave a copy) may be very effective here
- provide a Aheads up@ that NEON/SAPOZO is coming and constituents have a strong stake in having a regional hub/observatories established
- develop a SAPOZEO region based list of how NEON/SAPOZEO will benefit the legislator=s district/state
- remember: present SAPOZEO to legislators (and all similar contacts) as a regional entity, NOT a state entity (united we stand, divided we fall)
3. Respond to subcommittee reports (as requested by Jake Weltzin)
- organize colleagues, students, administration/management (and environmental advocacy groups?)
4. Each SAPOZEO institution should develop it=s own website
- link off institutional/departmental/division homepage
- organize to present NEON/SAPOZO capabilities and specifically highlight important elements identified by other breakout groups that are available from both individual institutions and SAPOZEO regional institutions.
- establish a two-way link between SAPOZEO website and each website institutional above.
5. Secure a written commitment/statement of support from administration/management of each represented institution in SAPOZEO
- put this on institutional website dedicated to NEON capabilities (#4 above).
6. Work to convince NEON Inc. that having them Arun the entire show@ is not the most efficient way to implement the program.
- likely to result in duplication of effort to implement support systems that may already be in place (or be more easily and cost-efficiently implemented) by regional institutions (SAPOZEO members).
7. Invite a member(s) fro Senior Management Team and/or NEON Advisory Board to attend SAPOZEO meetings
- would allow them to observe how well organized, institutionally supported and enthusiastic SAPZEO is.
