Subject: Invitation to SAPOZEO meeting at the Univ of Tennessee,  May 13

Hi everyone,

NEON seems to be moving along at a fairly  rapid pace and we thought it would be a good idea to hold another meeting of  members of SAPOZEO (Southern Appalachians to Ozarks Ecological  Observatory).  We’ve scheduled a 1-day meeting for Friday, May 13 at the  University of Tennessee (Ballroom, Univ of Tennessee Carolyn P Brown Memorial  University Center, 1502 West Cumberland Ave, parking available in the parking  garage and plaza on south side of the University Center).  The primary  purposes of the meeting are: (1)  to let you know how the national effort  (www.NEONInc.org) and the regional consortium activities (www.COREONEON.org) are  progressing, (2) to learn a little more about ongoing large-scale monitoring  activities in our region that we may have missed in our meeting last summer, and  (3) to develop ideas on key regional issues that NEON might address.   Attached is a tentative agenda.   Please send Jake or me other ideas  for topics to consider.  If you would like a few minutes to talk about a  NEON related activity and have not had a chance to do so in our last meeting,  please contact Jake or Pat.  Also, we encourage you to visit the NEONInc  and COREONEON websites listed above to learn more about these efforts.

We  have received a small grant from COREO and matching funds from the University of  Tennessee to help defray some of the travel costs for a limited number of  participants who have to fly or drive more than about 4 hours.  We can  cover portions of airfare and hotel stays for those folks, to a maximum of  $400.  People interested in taking advantage of this opportunity should  contact Jake (jweltzin@utk.edu) as soon as possible.  Requests for travel  support will be considered as they are received, but because of limited funds,  we’ll need to keep track of the cumulative expected reimbursement and may not be  able to honor all requests.  We are working to arrange a block of rooms in  a local hotel for Thursday and Friday nights at a discount  rate.

Jake has developed a SAPOZEO website (http://web.utk.edu/~jweltzin/SAPOZEO/sp_efforts.htm)  that also has links to other related sites.  Take a look at it.  Also,  if you haven’t already done so, please go to the website under the heading  SAPOZEO efforts and register yourself as an individual member of SAPOZEO.   We will pass out this listing at the May 13 meeting.  The website will  include additional details on the meeting as the date draws  near.

Finally, please let Jake know by May 2 if you will be  attending the meeting so we can arrange for enough space/coffee etc.  If  you notify us that you plan to attend but later find that you can’t, please also  let us know.  Please feel free to forward this email on to anyone who might  be interested.  If you are not on this distribution list and want to be  added, please let me know.

Thanks,

Pat Mulholland and Jake  Weltzin
