Water Resources


I am an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee. I recieved a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a MS in Fisheries Science (Water Resources) from Oregon State University, and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and have worked professionally for the U.S. Peace Corps, the U.S. EPA, and a private engineering consulting firm. I am an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, serving on the River Restoration Committee and Urban Water Resources Research Council (UWRRC). Currently, I chair a task committee with the UWRRC Urban Streams Standing Committee which is leading an effort to produce a guidance manual on assessing and monitoring urban stream restoration projects.

My research activities include watershed hydrology and sediment modeling, water quality characterization, ecological engineering, ecohydraulics, and stream restoration. My research team and I focus on understanding and predicting how human activities impact water quality, physical adjustment processes, and stream biological communities. I am particulary interested in conducting research at the interface between engineering and ecology disciplines and hope to improve how ecological data can be incorporated into the engineering design process for the rehabilitation of degraded "natural" systems.
