Submission guidelines

When you submit a piece of writing to Teen Ink, it is reviewed by a professional editorial staff who will decide if it is suitable for publication in the magazine or on the web site. Your submission is subject to editing and becomes property of Teen Ink, which retains non-exclusive rights.

Teen Ink receives thousands of submissions. They will keep your work on file for one year, so it is possible your writing will be published several months after you send it. The best way to increase your chances of published is to send several submissions and to limit the word length of each submission to no more than 2,500 words. If the Teen Ink editors publish your writing, you will be notified by letter or email.

If you are submitting to Teen Ink for the first time, you should read the complete submission guidelines. Here are some important reminders:

  • Include your name, year of birth, home address, name of school, and name of English teacher. (Ask permission first!)
  • Include a title.
  • At the end of the submission, include this statement plus your full name: This will certify that the above work is completely original.
  • Label each submission fiction or nonfiction.
  • Keep a back-up copy. (Teen Ink cannot return your writing.)
