Safety tips

The basics

When you go online there are no guarantees of privacy, safety, or security. It is unfortunate that the unethical, irresponsible, and unlawful behavior of a few individuals has tarnished the reputation of the Internet, even causing some people to question its educational value.

Growing up, you may have experienced restricted access to some or all forms of electronic communication and social networking tools. This is an issue that must be worked out within families and educational settings.

If you are granted the privilege of access to these powerful tools – cell phone, computer, Internet, MP3 player – you have a tremendous responsibility to use them ethically and responsibly. Please bear in mind:

  • Whenever possible, withhold personally identifiable information: last name, sports team, the town you live in, your favorite hang outs, and so on.
  • When personally identifiable information is required, by an editor for instance, always ask an adult's permission before providing it.
  • Avoid individuals who want to “meet” you in person.
  • Be extra cautious about the content and nature of photos you post.
  • Never lie about your age. In fact, never post or write anything online that you wouldn't feel comfortable saying in person to someone's face.
  • If you want additional security, you might choose to participate only at sites that require a username and password.
