Author bio
If you are serious about writing and publishing as a hobby or future vocation, at some point you will be required by an editor to submit an author bio. Follow these steps:
- Try starting the very first sentence with your full name (or the version of your name that you wish to see in print).
- After stating your name, finish the sentence with something about you. Try focusing on your academic or writing life. For example, if you like to write poetry, call yourself a “poet.” If you write songs, you are a “songwriter.” If you write essays, you are an “essayist,” and so on.
- Stay in the third person.
- If you have been published before, mention the titles of your previously published works and the titles of the publications in which they appeared.
- Try not to exceed three sentences.
- As always, be sure you have an adult's permission before submitting personal information electronically.
- Once you have written this short blurb, retain a copy of it in your electronic files and update it routinely so it will always be ready to go.
Read Writing an Author Bio that Will Knock the Editor's Socks Off. It was written by a freelance author. Be sure to scroll down to the end of the article and read her bio; it's a good model.
