All About Penguins - Quiz

Technology can provide exciting tools that enhance and enliven the learning experience. The Hot Potatoes suite from Half Baked Software, Inc. includes six applications, creation of interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web, and some great educational sites have been built using Half Baked software tools. It is free for use by state-funded educational institutions which are non-profit making, or individuals working for them, on the condition that the material produced using the program is freely available to anyone via the internet.

This would be a fun quiz to use during a science unit on Antarctic animals. Topics that would be covered in the penguin lesson and are included in the online quiz include:

• types of penguins

• habitat

• diet

• age span

• adaptation to their environment

• survival

• parenting

When students have learned about penguins in general, they could start learning about the different species of penguins and use maps to locate where the different penguins live. They could even adopt a penguin as part of a class project!
