Syllabus: Organ

(MusPerf 189, 190; 289, 290; 389, 390; 489, 490; 590; MusGen 101, 540)

 

TEXTBOOKS: Method books and organ music to fit individual students' needs. All students must have a hymnal of their choice.

GRADING: Based on preparation for lessons, weekly progress on assigned repertoire, and performance in jury exam and/or solo class as required (see below).

ORGAN SOLO CLASS: Tuesdays, 12:40 p.m., Room 401.

JURY EXAMS: TBA during exam week.

 

Requirements for various levels of study:

 

MUS GEN 101

(For students unable to satisfy prerequisites for Mus Perf 189.) 

PREREQ:  the ability to sight-read at the keyboard and to play at least one prepared piece.  No previous organ study required:  audition may be played on organ or piano.

REPERTOIRE LEVEL:  Basic manual and pedal technique; major and minor scales; literature chosen to meet the student's needs.  Emphasis on basic keyboard musicianship.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: 

1 credit (secondaries and electives):  0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; perform one piece each semester in organ solo class.

2 credits (students preparing to become organ minors, principals, or majors):  2-4 hours practice per day; perform at least once in organ solo class; 10-minute jury exam,  which may serve as an audition for Mus Perf 189.

 

MUS PERF 189

PREREQ: The ability to perform keyboard works comparable to J. S. Bach Little Preludes (for harpsichord/piano), Clementi Sonatinas (for piano), or 18th century English Voluntaries (for organ), and the ability to sight-read a four-part hymn tune at the piano or organ. Prior organ study not required. Audition may be done on piano, organ, or harpsichord.

REPERTOIRE LEVEL: Basic manual and pedal techniques for both pre-19th century and modern legato styles; Bach easier Preludes and Fugues and chorale preludes; trios by Krebs, Sorge; 17th and 18th century German chorale preludes; 18th century English Voluntaries; Sweelinck Echo Fantasias; Dupre 79 Chorales,15 Pieces; Reger Kleine Choralpreludien, Op. 135a; Brahms Chorale Preludes; Langlais Folkloric Suite;

contemporary hymn preludes; hymn playing.

2 credits (Music Education, Sacred Music, and B. A. principals; minors): 1.5 - 2 hours practice per day; perform at least once in organ solo class; 10-minute jury exam including at least one work of 3-5 minutes in length.

3 credits (Organ performance majors): 2 - 3 hours practice per day; perform at least once in organ solo class; 15-minute jury exam, including at least one 3-5 minute work from memory.

 

MUS PERF 190

Continuation of MusPerf 189.  Prereq:  MusPerf 189 with a grade of C or better.

 

MUS PERF 289

PREREQ: MusPerf 190 with a grade of C or better.

REPERTOIRE LEVEL: Continuation of 190, with the addition of works such as North German free and chorale-based works; Bach Orgelbuechlein; French classic movements and Noels; easier Mendelssohn movements; Vierne 24 Pieces in Free Style; medium-length works by representative 19th and 20th century composers.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1 credit (electives and secondaries): 0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; perform one piece in organ soloclass.

2 credits (Music Education, Sacred Music, and B. A. principals; minors): 1.5 - 2 hours practice per day; perform at least once in organ solo class; 10-minute jury exam including at least one work of 3-5 minutes in length.

3 credits (Organ performance majors): 2 - 3 hours practice per day; perform at least once in organ solo class; 15-minute jury exam, , including at least one 3-5 minute work from memory.

 

MUS PERF 290

Continuation of MusPerf 289.  Prereq:  MusPerf 289 with a grade of C or better.

 

MUS PERF 389

PREREQ: Mus Perf 290 with a grade of C or better and the ability to perform works such as Bach Orgelbuechlein and Preludes and Fugues BWV 531, 533, or 549; Vierne 24 Pieces en style libre; Mendelssohn Sonata II.

REPERTOIRE LEVEL: Bach trio sonatas, larger chorale preludes, preludes and fugues, toccatas, etc.; North German free and chorale-based works; French classic suites and Noels; Mendelssohn Sonatas; movements by Franck, Widor, Vierne, etc.; works by 20th century composers such as Hindemith, Alain, Messiaen, Hakim, Sowerby, Persichetti, and Albright.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1 credit (electives and secondaries): 0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class.

2 credits (Music Education, Sacred Music, and B. A. principals; minors): 1.5 - 2 hours practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class; 15-minute jury exam, including at least one major work.

3 credits (Organ performance majors): 2 - 3 hours practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class; 15-minute jury exam (10 minutes from memory), including at least one major work.

 

MUS PERF 390

Continuation of MusPerf 389.  Prereq:  MusPerf 389 with a grade of C or better.

 

MUS PERF 489

PREREQ: MusPerf 390 with a grade of C or better.

REPERTOIRE LEVEL: Continuation of 390 with the addition of larger Bach works such as BWV 580, 552, etc.; works by Sweelinck, Scheidt, Frescobaldi; Franck Chorales, major works of Dupre, Durufle, Messiaen, Distler, Heiller, Eben, etc.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1 credit (electives and secondaries): 0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ class.

2 credits (Music Education and B. A. principals; minors): 1.5 - 2 hours practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class; 10-minute jury exam each semester, including at least one major work.

3 credits (Sacred Music/Organ majors): 2 - 3 hours practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class; 15-minute jury exam each semester (10 minutes from memory), including at least one major work.

4 credits (Organ Performance majors): 3 - 4 hours practice per day; two performances of at least 5 minutes in length in organ solo class;

 

MUS PERF 490

Continuation of MusPerf 489.  Prereq:  MusPerf 489 with a grade of C or better.

 

MUS GEN 540 (For graduate students studying organ as a secondary instrument)

PREREQ: the ability to sight-read at the keyboard and to play at least one prepared piece. No previous organ study required: audition may be played on organ, harpsichord, or piano.

REPERTOIRE: selected to meet the needs of the student.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1 credit: 0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; perform one piece in organ solo class.

2 credits: 1.5 - 2 hours practice per day; perform one piece in organ solo class; 10-minute jury exam.

 

MUS PERF 590

PREREQ: (1) Completion of an undergraduate degree with organ as the principal instrument or equivalent study and performance on the organ, including at least one full public recital of repertoire comparable to the Mus Perf 489-490 level.

(2) An audition of approximately 20 minutes including at least two major works from contrasting schools of composition and one smaller work. Candidates will be asked to play a standard hymn tune at sight as if accompanying a singing congregation.

REPERTOIRE: Representative works from all periods and styles, continuation of Mus Perf 489-490.

PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1 credit (electives and secondaries): 0.5 - 1 hour practice per day; one performance of at least 5 minutes in length each semester in organ class.

2 credits: 2 - 2.5 hours practice per day; two performances of at least 5 minutes in length in organ class; 15-minute jury exam, including at least one complete major work.

4 credits: 3 - 4 hours practice per day; two performances of at least 5 minutes in length in organ class; 15-minute jury exam each semester (10 minutes from memory), including at least one complete major work.

 

Organ Recital Requirements

 

MUS GEN 301 (HALF RECITALl)

25-30 minutes of music chosen from repertoire at the Mus Perf 390 level, including at least one major work. Up to one-fourth of the program may consist of works with one or more other instruments or voice.  Organ Performance majors are required to perform at least one-third of the recital from memory. Sacred Music/Organ majors must include a congregational hymn with prepared introduction, varied accompaniments, alternatim organ stanza(s), etc.

 

MUS GEN 401 (FULL RECITAL)

50-55 minutes of music chosen from repertoire at the Mus Perf 389 to 490 levels, including at least two major works. Up to one-fourth of the program may consist of music with one or more other instruments or voice. Organ Performance majors are required to perform at least one-third of the recital from memory.  Sacred Music/Organ majors must include a congregational hymn with prepared introduction, varied accompaniments, alternatim organ stanza(s), etc.

 

MUS GEN 501 (GRADUATE RECITAL)

50-55 minutes of music chosen from repertoire at the Mus Perf 590 level, including at least two major works.
