Standard background reading generally begins with George A. Kennedy's Classical Rhetoric and its Christian and Secular Tradition (Chapel Hill: UNC P, 1999.  A broader survey may be found in Thomas M. Conley's Rhetoric in the European Tradition (Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1990).  The premier journal in the history of rhetoric is Rhetorica: A Journal o f the History of Rhetoric. The major American professional organizations in the history of rhetoric are the International Society for the History of Rhetoric and the American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR). The ASHR website includes links to a number of valuable resources, including bibliographies.
