International Literary Colloquy, Now Accepting Applications!

UT International Literary Colloquy, Spring 2010
Three books focusing on fairy tales from three different Cultures!
This is your Invitation to Join!
In support of UT'S READY FOR THE WORLD International and Intercultural Awareness Initiative, the Center for International Education seeks participants in its spring 2010 International Literary Colloquy. Over its thirteen years, the ILC has engaged hundreds of UT students, faculty, and staff in exploring cultural themes in books written by or about various world societies.
Sixty ILC spaces will be available this spring semester and the UT community is invited to apply. Each participant will be provided with copies of the three books and is expected to participate in all three book discussions and thematic luncheons. This semester's three books are set in fairy tales from three different Cultures. Experts on the included themes will facilitate the discussions which take place during three Wednesdays or three Thursdays from 11:30 to 1:00 pm at the International House.

If you wish to be considered for participation in the Spring 2010 ILC, please either pick up an application form at the front desk of the UT International House or download the application here. Once the application is completed it can be turned in to the I-House front desk or emailed to ihouse@utk.edu .
Applications must be received by February 11, 2010! Applicants are expected to commit to participation in all three Wednesday or three Thursday luncheon discussions. Participants will hear about their acceptance to the ILC soon after February 11, 2010.

Santa Study Break

German Christmas Cookies Cooking Demonstration

Do you know how Christmas is like in Germany? Want to know about the authentic German Christmas treats? Come join us in the German Christmas Cookies Cooking Demonstration. Learn about the rich traditions of the German Christmas culture and its connections with the Christmas culture you are familiar with! Try and make some German Christmas Cookies with our instructor Vera P Broux yourself and have a taste of it! Trip to Cirque de Chine
The International House is gladly inviting you to the Cirque de Chine trip, one of the best production the Smoky Mountain Palace has offered to date. The show is performed by an award winning troupe new to the Smoky Mountain Palace. The cast offers the traditional Chinese cultural acrobatics but in a very fast paced, and at times breath taking, manner.
The costumes are absolutely gorgeous; the music selected not only is appropriate for the acts but actually enhances them, and the skill of the acrobats is extraordinary.
The International House has been offered a great deal on the ticket price due to our collaboration with the show crew before. You are paying the price for 6 to 9 years old in this case instead of a $30 full amount. It is sure to be a great experience, so don't miss out! Tickets are on sale now at the I-House front desk now, and it ends on Thursday November 19 at 5 pm.
Schedule for the Trip: First to Cirque de Chine to see the show (lasts about 2 hours), then to local restaurant for an early dinner (travelers need to pay for own dinner). Before heading back to UT, we will take a city tour by bus and see the fabulous Christmas lights and holiday view there. Schedule is subjuect to change on that day.

Two professional Latin American tango dancers from the Knoxville Argentine Tango Society are going to teach you the perfect steps of original Latin American Tango. Turkish Cultural Training "Doing Business with Turkish People"

The International House presents Turkish Cultural Training: "Doing Business with Turkish People" as the kickoff of Turkey Week from November 2nd to November 6th. Participants will be utilizing a cultural training module to discuss their perspectives about doing business with Turkish people and other Turkish culture related questions. There will be Turkish businessmen/businesswomen present to provide suggestions and answer questions also. This is sure to be a insightful night! Business majored or not, you will definitely benefit from it!

Hiking Trip - Ramsay Cascades, Great Smoky Mountains

The International House would like to invite you to the Great Smoky Mountain hiking trip! We will be hiking to the Ramsay Cascades on Saturday, October 24th. With Fall upon us the Smoky Mountains are at their most beautiful, with the leaves showing an array of gorgeous colors. We will also be stopping by the falls to have a picnic (food will not be provided by the I-House). So you can eat, make new friends, and enjoy the scenery! Tickets are only $4 for transportation fees, and they are on sale at the I-House front desk now. The space is limited so come in and sign up today! The deadline for signing up is Thursday, October 22 at 5: 00 pm.
We will begin loading the bus at 7:30 am in front of the I-house and leave at 7:45 am. The bus will also stop by the Sutherland and Golf Range apartments afterward. Japanese Cultural Training: "Doing Business with Japanese"

The International House presents Japanese Cultural Training: "Doing Business with Japanese" as the theme of Coffee House Program in the Japan Week, the 5th thematic week going on within the International House. Participants will be using a tool named "Diversophy" in small groups. Questions about doing business with Japanese will be asked. Participants answer questions by sharing their thoughts, perspectives, and real life experiences that relate to the question. Everyone has the chance to speak up. More interestingly, some Japanese businessmen from local community will be present at the event to answer questions, and provide suggestions on the Do's and Don'ts of doing business with Japanese, from their cultural backgrounds and gained experiences here at the U.S.

International Coffee House - Greek Cooking Demonstration
Dear students, faculty, and staff,
The International House would like to invite you to the International Coffee House program tomorrow night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Greece is the theme for the programs at the International House this week, incorporating with it, the Coffee House presents Greek Cooking Demonstration for you to get a real experience in Greek culture, giving the fact that food tights in greatly in the nation's culture, and also a significant part of the influences that Greece brought into the western world. Vera Pantanizopoulos-Broux, a faculty in the Foreign Language Department here at UT, who was born and raised in a traditional Greek family, and also had run her own family deli with mainly Greek food, will be the instructor showing you how to make Baklavá, the well-known and popular dessert in the world, and Horiátiki Salata, as known as the Greek salad, which is actually made differently in Greece than in the U.S. These two dishes will be fun to make, to cook, and NOT difficult to learn at all. Therefore, mark your calendar for tomorrow night, come and make Greek dishes by your own hands! Become a semi-pro of Greek food, because more dish items will be mentioned by the instructor with the culture explanation!
