Conversations About World Affairs, with the Venerable Pomnyum Sunim
It's time for another installment of Conversations About World Affairs. Our speaker this Thursday November 8, 2007 at 7pm will be the Venerable Pomnyun Sunim, founder of Good Friends: Centre for Peace, Human Rights, and Refugees. His lecture will focus on North Korea and human rights.
The Venerable Pomnyun Sunim was born in South Korea in 1953. Sunim grew up in a time when North and South Korea were in major turmoil. The differences between the two countries were reinforced by the Cold War. Sunim desired to change that. As a Buddhist monk and leader of South Korea's Jung-To (or Blessed Land) Society, he has advanced the cause of reconciliation. He also started the Good Friends: Centre for Peace, Human Rights, and Refugees, which was established in 1996. The organization, Good Friends, strives to implement peace and human rights to displaced people in Asia and other nations worldwide. In 2002, Venerable Pomnyun Sunim was elected to receive the 2002 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding.
