HEAD, Department of Industrial and Information Engineering
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering (IIE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). The department has a current enrollment of approximately 150 students, including 78 UG, 45 MS and 27 PhD students, with 9 tenured/tenure-track faculty. Overall, the college has eight departments with a total of 2700 students and is ranked by US News as 68th among all colleges granting a PhD, and is currently 40th among public colleges of engineering granting the PhD. The department (along with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), is scheduled to relocate to a new $25 million teaching and research facility, with the groundbreaking scheduled in late 2009. The department is entering a significant new era and is expected to play an important role in the College of Engineering's vision to become a leading research institution and to take advantage of unique opportunities for research partnerships with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS), a national NSF center recently awarded to the university and housed in nearby Oak Ridge TN. IIE also interacts with on-campus centers including the Reliability and Maintainability Center, the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) and the state’s Institute for Public Service and its Center for Industrial Services.
Primary responsibilities of the department head are to provide visionary leadership; to encourage excellence and innovation in research, teaching, and service; to advance professional development of faculty, staff and students; to promote productive relationships with all constituents including students, parents, alumni, industry and government agencies; and to foster productive interdisciplinary relationships with a variety of entities across the University community.
Qualifications: Applicants must hold a doctorate degree in industrial engineering, or an included field such as manufacturing engineering, operations research, human factors/ergonomics, systems engineering, and be eligible for appointment at the rank of full Professor. Commitment to, and knowledge of, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and diversity are required. The successful candidate must also have a balanced perspective on research and teaching, as well as the vision and ability to lead a faculty representing a diversified range of interests. In addition, experience is required that demonstrates strong and successful administrative skills and proven leadership skills. The candidate must also have demonstrated excellence in research, professional practice, technical leadership, and graduate and undergraduate teaching. In addition, the ability to initiate and implement cross-disciplinary programs between IIE and other engineering departments, the College of Business Administration and other academic entities across campus is highly desirable.
