Industrial and Information Engineering
Welcome to the Department of Industrial & Information Engineering at The University of Tennessee. Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org), the department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctoral degrees. The department also offers a dual-degree option in which both a Master of Science and a Master of Business Administration can be obtained in a two-year program. Master of Science degree with a concentration in Engineering Management is available through the Engineering Management Group of the department at The University of Tennessee Space Institute at Tullahoma.
While other types of engineers design things, industrial engineers (IEs) design the systems that enable those things to work effectively. IEs design, install, improve and control large, complex systems that include the integration of people, materials, machines and facilities with wide-ranging applications including:
- manufacturing
- healthcare
- public service
- transportation
- retail
- finance
- construction
- entertainment
In fact, most companies or organizations (profit or nonprofit) can benefit from the work of industrial engineers.
The industrial engineering field is also one of the fastest-growing professions in the U.S. and is essentially recession-proof given the wide-ranging applications of IE.
