Tennessee Downs Georgia for SCHC Title

March 1st, 2009 – The Tennessee Ice Vols upended the Georgia Bulldogs 13-6 on Sunday to claim the hardware in the inaugural Southeastern Hockey Conference Championship (SHCC) tournament.  After blowing a three goal lead in the third and needing extra time to get past the pesky Florida Gators the night before, the Vols kept the Bulldogs from ever drawing close.

In the bronze medal game, the South Carolina Gamecocks came out on top and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record by defeating Florida.  The Gators were able to play spoilers to host Alabama, after upsetting the Crimson Tide on Friday night, but could not manage another victory on the weekend, despite taking Tennessee to overtime.

The Big Orange will head to Rochester, NY on Tuesday in hopes for a National Title bid as they will take on perennial contender, Hope College.  The Flying Dutchmen will play host to the Vols at 7:00 PM EST on Wednesday night.

TEnnessee sneaks past Florida in Semis

February 28th, 2009 – Tennessee looked to their star players for some help as they blew a three goal lead and fell behind Florida late in the third period, and that is exactly what they got.  Kevin Jones tied the game with less than thirty seconds left, and Captain Joe Williams proved his worth as the South Region Player of the Year by notching the winner in the fourth period as Tennessee squeaked by Florida 8-7 in Overtime to clinch a spot in the SHCC title game.

Tennessee, whom held a 5-2 lead at one point in the game, received a mighty scare from the Gators as Florida completed the comeback and then took the lead late in the third frame before Jones tied the game up at 7 with Vols netminder Joe Gauvin on the bench for the extra attacker.

The win secures Tennessee a spot in the finals, and they will face Georgia for the trophy as the Bulldogs secured their spot with a victory over South Carolina.

Vols Storm past Bulldogs in SCHC opener

February 27th, 2009 – The Tennessee Ice Vols blew past the Mississippi State Bulldogs 24-1 in the opening game of the Inaugural Southeast Hockey Conference Championship (SCHC) featuring eight of the ten schools in the SEC.  Freshman Kyle Sullivan and Jack Bradshaw both scored their first career collegiate goals, and Senior Mike Barlow picked up his first career victory in his first start in goal by turning aside 15 of 16 Mississippi State shots.

Despite the lopsided score, the majority of the Ice Vols offence came from the team’s younger less experienced players who made use of extended playing time usually seen by Tennessee’s big guns.  Bradshaw, who had yet to score a goal this season, potted a hat trick while Sr. defenseman Ray Herndon had five helpers.  Having only played in only three previous games this season, Herndon had yet to notch a point.

Tennessee will take on the Florida Gators tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM CST in the semi-final game.  Florida advanced to the semi-finals after they upset host Alabama 8-3.  This will be the second meeting between UT and UF this season as Tennessee swamped Florida 15-4 in October in Jacksonville.   The winner of the game will play Sunday afternoon for the Championship.

NOTES:

Several Vols were acknowledged during the opening ceremonies of the tournament at 6:30 PM.  Team Captain Joe Williams was acknowledged for two accolades.  He was voted ACHA South Region Player of the year for the second time in his four years and was also nominated as an All-Star being named to the 1st Team South Region.  Junior forward Kevin Jones was also nominated for his play on the ice as he was named an All-Star to the 2nd Team South Region.  Four Vols were also acknowledged for their excellence in the classroom, as Daniel Grapski, Kelsey McLean, Tommy Morgan and Charles Teixeira were all named to the Academic All-American Team.

Tennessee gets set for Conference Championship

February 25th, 2009 – The Tennessee Hockey Club will travel to Pelham, AL as one of 8 SEC schools partaking in the inaugural Southeast Hockey Conference Championship, hosted by the Alabama Frozen Tide.  In eight games this season, Tennessee supports a 6-1-0-1 record against teams of the SEC.  Their only loss in regulation came to D2 Kentucky, at the hostile Lexington Ice Center.

The Ice Vols will open up the tournament as the high favorite to win.  The game will be at 12 noon CST on Friday against Mississippi St. University. It will mark the first time the two teams have ever played, as MSU is still building up their fairly new program.

Absent from the Championship will be D2 Kentucky, who chose not to partake in the event, and annual cellar-dweller Vanderbilt who do not have a coaching staff.  Auburn and Ole Miss will also not partake in the event as they are the only two schools in the SEC who do not support club hockey programs.

All games will be played at the Pelham Civic Complex in Pelham, AL. For a list of all game times and the tournament bracket please visit the Frozen Tide online.

Big Orange headed to Nationals!!!

February 15th, 2009 – After a successful weekend in Duluth, GA the Tennessee Hockey Club earned their third consecutive bid to the ACHA Div III National Championship with two victories against #9 CNU and #5 ECU respectively.  The Vols will play the Flying Dutchmen from Hope College in the opening round of the tournament at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009.

On Friday night Tennessee got off to a slow start only leading #9 Christopher Newport University 2-0 after 20 minutes, but sent the Captains out to sea for good after a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.  The game finished 8-2 in favor of Tennessee, highly in thanks to CNU’s lack of discipline as over half of the Volunteers’ goals came with the man advantage.

Then on Saturday night, with #3 Central Florida – who narrowly escaped past George Washington University in the final minute – securing the third seed from the South Region, Tennessee was able to secure the fourth and final seed after defeating #5 Eastern Carolina University.  Tennessee’s offence got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first minute, and proved to be too strong for the pesky Pirates as they exploded for nine goals in the final two periods on way to a 13-7 victory.

With Tennessee up 5-2 early in the second, the Pirates fought their way back into the game with three unanswered goals to give the Vols a slight scare.  However, again Tennessee’s offense proved too strong, as the Big Orange sunk the Pirates for good with five goals to finish out the middle frame and three more in the third to secure their trip to Rochester, NY.

Rochester Bound

Tennessee will head to Rochester, NY to compete in their third consecutive National Tournament with a record of 19-6-0-1.  Last season Tennessee finished in 9th place with a 3-1 record, improving on their 2-2 record and 12th place finish in 2006-2007.  This is Tennessee’s fifth appearance in the past eight years at the tournament.  The Vols will play the Hope College Flying Dutchmen in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at 7:00 PM.

Note: After a quick start to the season, the Vols lost a lot of momentum and went seven games without consecutive wins.  But after losing to #2 Georgia Tech on November 14th, Tennessee has been on a roll going 11-2 and only suffering losses to #3 Central Florida and DII Kentucky.  In that span of 13 games they have managed to score 103 goals and reached double figures in five of them.  Perhaps most impressively the Vols have overcome a 3 goal-deficit for a victory in three of those games, against #4 College of the Canyons (Pacific), DII Toledo, and DII Kentucky.

 nUMBER ONE bABY!

But Eagles soar past Vols in third period
October 11th, 2008 – Joe Williams’ second four point night in a row would prove to be a record setting one as he stormed past Preston Dixon as UT’s All-Time Leading Scorer to finish the night at number one with 217 points.  However, unfortunately the monumental night was spoiled thanks to five unanswered goals in the third period by the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, as they rallied to defeat the Vols 6-4.  Tennessee jumped out to an early lead thanks to Tommy Morgan’s redirect only 4:15 into the period.  Three Power Play goals later in the period would help the Vols to hold a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.  FGCU would score once in the second frame to narrow the lead to three before scoring three Power Play goals in the third to tie the game, and two more goals late in the third to complete the comeback by out-shooting the Vols 26-1 on eight Power Play opportunities.  Despite surrendering six goals BJ Keyes put in a solid performance in goal stopping 37 shots and kept the Vols alive while killing so many penalties.
