American Academy in Rome Affiliated Fellowship

The Office of Research is pleased to announce that the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has reached an agreement with the American Academy in Rome to establish an annual affiliated fellowship at the American Academy, for a period of 4-6 weeks in May and June. The UT affiliated fellow becomes a full member of the scholarly and artistic community at the American Academy, with all of the opportunities and privileges of Rome Prize fellows and affiliated fellows from other institutions.

The UT affiliated fellowship will be available to all UT faculty members, graduate students, and administrators in fields eligible for a Rome Prize from the American Academy.

Fields in the humanities: Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian Studies.

Fields in the arts: Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Landscape Architecture, Musical Composition, Visual Arts

Applications in other fields in the humanities and the arts that are consistent with the expectations and standards of the Rome Prize may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

We will necessarily conduct two competitions this academic year, one in the fall and one in the spring, in order to align our selection process with the selection calendar of the Rome Prize fellows and other affiliated fellows. In subsequent years we will hold the competition only in the spring.

The first competition, for residence in May/June 2010, will have a deadline of 5pm on November 16, 2009.  Please note: The available dates for this residency are limited to May 17-June 28, 2010. The second competition, for residence in May/June 2011, will have a deadline of 5pm on March 1, 2010. Please submit proposals electronically to Alan Rutenberg, arutenberg@utk.edu .

The Office of Research, in collaboration with the department of the selected affiliated fellow, will provide all necessary funds for the affiliated fellowship, including travel expenses.

A committee consisting primarily of UT faculty members and administrators who previously have been in residence at the American Academy will select the affiliated fellow. Please note: some preference will be given to those who have previously applied for the Rome Prize. You may apply for the affiliated fellowship and the Rome Prize concurrently. The current application date for the Rome Prize is November 1, 2009. See  http://www.aarome.org

The application is similar to the one for the Rome Prize, of course without the online application form and fees.  See http://www.aarome.org/apply-to-the-rome-prize.php for the specific and distinct arts and humanities application guidelines. All affiliated fellowship application will include the following, with modifications of the project proposal and work sample as stated in the guidelines:

  • Cover page, including the name, department, and college of the applicant and the full title of the proposal
  • Current resume/curriculum vitae
  • Project proposal describing the nature of the work the applicant intends to undertake in Rome, identifying special resources in Italy important to the project.
