Annual Workshop for Teachers of Social Studies

Since 1979, the Department of History at the University of Tennessee has sponsored an annual Workshop for Teachers of Social Studies. Held on a Saturday morning in March, the workshop usually features four to six sessions that give teachers a variety of methodological and pedagogical approaches to the teaching of history, as well as some practical teaching aids and information to use in the classroom. The Workshop for Teachers of Social Studies reflects the continuing commitment of the Department of History to excellence in teaching at all levels. Over the years, teachers of social studies have shown their appreciation for this commitment in the best possible way: They return to the workshop every March!

Research Seminar on Modern Germany

pic of paintingA growing number of humanities faculty with research interests related to Germany now belong to the UT community. This interdisciplinary group of scholars, along with interested students, is now large enough to launch a whole number of enterprises in German studies. One of these ventures began in the fall of 2006 with funding from UT's Humanities Initiative, and we are pleased to extend a cordial invitation to this "Research Seminar on Modern Germany and Central Europe" to individuals at UT and beyond. History professors Vejas Liulevicius, Denise Phillips, and David Tompkins, as well as graduate students in history, are particularly active in this seminar, and have presented their own research and led book discussions.
