Application Procedures and Admission Requirements
At the master's level, a student may concentrate on one of three different fields: United States; premodern Europe and modern Europe. Students will be admitted into the master's program based on evidence of academic ability and promise. GRE scores, undergraduate GPA, and the quality of the applicant's writing sample and letters of recommendation will all be considered. While most applicants will have earned an undergraduate degree in History, this not a requirement for admission.
Ph.D.s are awarded in specialized fields in the history of the United States, premodern Europe, and modern Europe. A student seeking admission to the doctoral program must present a master's degree in History or a related field from an accredited college or university. GRE scores, previous GPA, and the quality of the applicant's writing sample and letters of recommendation will all be considered in admission decisions.
The following admission procedures apply to both M.A. and Ph.D. applicants. Certain admission materials are sent directly to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office (218 Student Services Bldg.), while other materials are sent directly to the History Department (Dunford Hall). All application materials are due by December 31.
- Completed applications received by December 31 will be considered for admission and funding for the fall semester.
- Completed applications received after December 31 and no later than March 31 will be considered for admission without funding for the fall semester.
- Completed applications received after March 31 and no later than May 1 will be considered for admission without funding for the spring semester.
