Modern Latin America, Modern Brazil
Professor Diacon's research explores the history of twentieth-century Brazil, especially in terms of the relationship between nation and state building. His recent book on this topic, Stringing Together a Nation: Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon and the Construction of a Modern Brazil, 1906-1930 (Duke University Press), won the Warren Dean Prize (Conference on Latin American History) for the best book published on the history of Brazil in 2003 and 2004.
