Professor Ash specializes in the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction. Much of his research has focused on the experience of the Southern people in regions invaded by the Union army during the war. He recently completed a book that tells the story of the South during the year 1865 through the experiences of four ordinary people.
The courses that Professor Ash teaches include the American History survey, undergraduate courses on Civil War/Reconstruction and Tennessee History, and graduate reading and research seminars on Civil War/Reconstruction.
