Most of Professor Ash’s research has dealt with the American Civil War and Reconstruction. His most recent book tells the story of a little-known military expedition involving black Union troops that invaded Florida in 1863 to free the slaves.
The courses that Professor Ash teaches include the American History survey, undergraduate courses on Civil War/Reconstruction and Tennessee History, and graduate reading and research seminars on Civil War/Reconstruction.
