Field Specialties

Modern France, Modern Europe, European Imperialism

In addition to teaching the second half of the Western Civilization survey, Professor Andersen teaches courses on Modern France, the French Revolution, Nineteenth Century Europe, Twentieth Century Europe, and Modern European Imperialism.

Interested in the impact of empire on French political life, Professor Andersen is currently working on a book manuscript about French pronatalism, a political movement organized to address fears of demographic decline. Her research focuses on the ways in which colonial concerns intersected with demographic anxieties throughout the Third Republic (1870-1940). In particular, pronatalists looked beyond France for solutions to the depopulation crisis as they studied comparatively high birthrates among French colonial settlers, drew lessons from population policies introduced in Madagascar, and applauded the introduction of a familialist model of voting in Morocco and Tunisia.
