Field Specialties

U.S. antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction; history of education; women’s and gender history

Dr. Cohen’s research centers on the history of higher education in nineteenth-century America. He is currently finishing a book, under contract with the University of Virginia Press, titled Reconstructing the Campus: Higher Education and the American Civil War. This book explores the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on colleges’ curricula, admissions policies, and relationships with government. Dr. Cohen is also assistant editor of the Correspondence of James K. Polk.
