Welcome to the Department of History
The Department of History at the University of Tennessee is a community of distinguished scholars and excellent teachers at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2007 sixteen of its twenty-one faculty members have either published a scholarly book or won a major research fellowship, and five have done both. During this academic year four professors are holding prestigious fellowships: Ernest Freeberg (American Council of Learned Societies), J. P. Dessel (National Endowment for the Humanities), Denise Philips (Fulbright), and Tom Chaffin (Fulbright). Yet that same faculty teaches more undergraduates per person than almost any other department at this university, and is known across campus for its award-winning instructors. When you study here, you study with experts.
Our bachelor’s degree program allows students to learn from historians of the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Our excellent MA and PhD programs focus on selected areas of American history (especially the nineteenth-century and the history of religion in America) and European history (especially the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Modern Germany).
Take time to explore our website and learn more about the distinguished historians who could be teaching you.
