Searching for a Job in Technical Communication

Many avenues can connect you with honest work, my friends! Here are a few of them.

* Join, or continue to associate with, the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC/ETC). It's very good for you to rub elbows with practicing technical communicators. They are great sources of information, guidance, and job connection.

* If you wish to be added to the STC/ETC listserv, ask me to add you; you'll then get all chapter announcements, including job announcements. BTW, the URL for the society is http://stc-va.org, and the URL for our chapter is http://www.stc.org/region3/etc/index.html.

* Check out the "Jobs/Salary Info" link off the STC web site (http://www.stc-va.org/fjobstart.htm).

* Point your browser at http://listserv.utk.edu/archives/etc-l.html to look through the archives of ETC-L for the past few months to see what job ops people have posted to the list. Most are gleaned from other lists, like techwr-l, and the jobs they announce are seldom for this area. Still, you will find some work in the Knoxville/OR area.

* Do your own monitoring of tech-comm related lists like techwr-l.

* Attend STC conferences. A great way to get career bearings, make contacts, learn stuff, and have fun.

* Go to Hodges Library and check out Victoria Johns' MA thesis: _Technical Communication Employment Opportunities in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Area_. It is 8 years old (1992), but it is still a valuable resource for you. It offers analysis of the tech comm scene around here as well as contact info for many businesses that have hired technical communicators. Some of that contact info will of course be outdated now, but you can deal with that.

* Remember that, although our area is beautiful, and yes, there is some tech comm work available here, there is much more work _outside_ the Knoxville-Oak Ridge area. Are you willing/able to move? Or maybe to commute, like to Atlanta (a long commute, to be sure. Do you enjoy books on tape?) Check out the computerjobs.com site for Atlanta: (http://www.atlanta.computerjobs.com/atlanta_html/pub/job_drilldown.html) and click the "Technical Writer" link.

* Contact temporary staffing agencies like Staffing Solutions (482-0091), Office Team (588-5456), ManPower Technical (977-0472), Kelly Services (690-6461), CDI (483-3131) and especially Randstad (470-9633). All these organizations have local offices. Some are looking for full-time staffers as well as for workers to place into temporary jobs with clients.

A further note on Randstad:
Call Nicole, Denise, or Landon (470-9633) to talk about employment through that agency. Randstad is an international company based in the Netherlands. They are the market leader there and are becoming leaders in some other European countries. The five Randstad offices in the Knoxville area are part of Randstad North America, which is headquartered in Atlanta. They provide employment services in the areas of Office Talent, Industrial Talent, Technical Services, Creative Talent, Professional Resources, Outsourcing, and Training.

Randstad provides its employees health coverage, a 401K savings program, training, mentoring, and career guidance. They have a reputation for taking good care of their employees. More information can be found at www.randstadna.com.

* Don't neglect the services of the UT Dept. of Career Services over in 100 Dunford Hall (http://web.utk.edu/~career).

* Try launching your job search right at your computer terminal. Here's an article on that subject that appeared in Verbatim, newsletter of the South Carolina chapter of STC:

FINDING A JOB ON THE INTERNET
If you are a contract technical writer, unemployed, or simply curious about the current market for technical writers, you should know that a powerful job-seeking tool is hidden within your Web browser. Richard Bolles, author of What Color Is Your Parachute, estimated that there are more than 11,000 web sites on the Internet that deal with jobs, job hunting, and careers. In addition to sites that provide free advice on careers and resume writing, there is an ever-increasing number of sites that provide searchable databases of jobs with direct links to recruiters and human resource professionals.

Most sites have fairly good search engines that allow you to search for jobs in their extensive databases of employers and job opportunities. By using generic keywords or defining specific search strings, you can access literally thousands of available jobs. Alternatively, you can limit your searches to specific companies.

Things to Consider Before Going Online
To take advantage of the different sites, you should have your resume in three different flavors: a version using a standard word processing
application like Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect, an ACSII text version, and an HTML version. Both Microsoft Word (7.0) and WordPerfect (7.0) will allow you to save a regularly formatted file as either ASCII or HTML. With the HTML version, verify that the file looks like the version you want to have available onIine. (You will get a plain vanilla resume from the convert feature of your word processing application. Those with even a little familiarity with HTML, however, will want to tinker with the HTML code to get a more precise match between the printed and online versions.)

Remember that your resume will be available for millions to see and read: decide if you really want your phone number and address available on the Internet. If you don't, simply take care to delete them from your three versions. You can provide your phone number when sending a resume in response to a bona fide job posting.

You should keep in mind that all these sites have an expiration date, after which time your resume will be removed from the site. Most, if not all sites, will allow you to extend your time by simply revising and resubmitting the resume. You will need to note the valid time period for each site. Time periods vary widely, so you must keep a list of active sites. Of course, it goes without saying that your online resume should be keep up to date.

Please note that all these employment services are free, paid for by advertisers whose banners fly variously above the different Web Sites. You should not be called upon to pay for any service offered by these Web Sites. Assuming that you have Internet access, all sites containing job seekers resumes will allow you to upload at least an ASCII version of your resume for free. Some sites allow you to upload either an ASCII or an HTML version of your resume. The benefit in providing HTML, as opposed to simple ASCII text, is that, unless you have done some pretty fancy things with your resume (like creating floating frames or Java applets), you will control the online look of your resume.

Internet Recruiters
One of the problems inherent in job seeking on the Internet concerns the sheer number of recruiters who are online. Most of these recruiters are legitimate human resources professionals, but some, unfortunately, are people who are simply working as head hunters for job shops specializing in contract (temporary) jobs. Be aware that their only goal is to earn more, by placing a person in a job, so they have no vested, personal interest in either the candidate, the job, or the client. Thankfully, these people are rare, but I have encountered them, and those of you who have not done contract work before should be forewarned that such people exist.

Also note that with the sheer number of recruiters online, you are bound to get several recruiters attempting to place you in the same job. Jobs are up for grabs: whoever places a person in the job collects the fee.

Typically, the in-house recruiter has a better knowledge of the benefits and what is possible in terms of negotiating benefits, such as vacation or relocation expenses, than the non-company recruiter. For example, it is frustrating to get into a situation where you are interested in a job, receive assurances that you have a good chance to land the job, only to find that because you don't know RoboHelp, you don't get the job. Dealing with an in-house recruiter helps you avoid such situations.

Here's another source of job info:
Full-Service Employment Resource Available on the TECHWR-L Web Site

RayComm, Inc. owners Eric and Deborah Ray announce the addition of "Employment Central" to the TECHWR-L Web site at: http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/employment/

The new Employment Central feature is a free, full-service database of technical writing specific jobs and personal profiles. Employment Central offers a free targeted employment resource for the technical communication community that aims to make recruiting and job hunting easier and more effective than sifting through listings on less-specific employment resources.

"We're ecstatic about the interest and participation so far," comments Eric Ray. "In the first two weeks, companies and agencies added more than 150 job postings to the service, and nearly 100 personal profiles were added. We're delighted that we hit on an area that the technical communication community seems to really want and need," he adds.

The Employment Central database is part of the Employment area on the TECHWR-L Web site, which also houses a mentoring program, articles, and topic summaries. "We're working hard to develop this area of the site," says Deborah Ray.

This addition to the TECHWR-L site improves on the old Contractors Database, which provided contact information for contract technical writing professionals. Without any publicity, the Contractors Database grew to include nearly 700 people in its first 18 months. "We've received lots of feedback reporting that people who participated had been contacted for contract work," says Deborah. That usage and feedback indicated that a more capable and versatile employment resource would be a popular component of the TECHWR-L site.

The new Employment Central feature is made possible by TECHWR-L advertisers and sponsors.

For more information about the TECHWR-L Employment Central feature, about advertising on TECHWR-L, or about sponsoring the TECHWR-L site and its features, contact Deborah Ray (debray@raycomm.com) or Eric Ray (ejray@raycomm.com), or visit the TECHWR-L site (http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/).

Dr. Hirst, please communicate to your students that while correct technical terminology and format are critical to success in our field, you must be able to incorporate these skills with certain software tools. I have included links to the trial versions of the latest "buzz" tools, as well as to RoboHelp.

Interesting News from one who has gone before. Want to work with UT alumni in Atlanta?
Dr. Hirst, I just wanted to say hello and tell you how much I learned in the classes I took from you. I landed a great job at a software company in Atlanta called Novient. I'm making really good money and the atmosphere here is really nice. It seems every day, I'm impressing people with things about writing and editing that I learned in your editing class. The first week I was here, a white paper for one of our new products was sent out to the 8 writers to be edited, and they ended up using my edit! Well, I just wanted to thank your for preparing me so well for the technical writing field.

Also, I thought you might want to tell your students/former students that we are still looking for writers. We have about 8 right now and we're looking to grow to about 20 in the next year or so. If you know anyone who's looking for work in Atlanta, have them send me their resume, so I can recommend them to our HR people.

Sincerely,

Ian Anderson

JOB OPPORTUNITY at Marketlinx Solutions
Email to me from former student Matt Mahoney, Graphic Designer/ Programmer with Marketlinx Solutions
Phone: 865 218-3610

mmahoney@marketlinx.com
http://www.marketlinx.com

Professor Hirst, I am sending this email to follow up on the phone call I made today, during which you requested I send some more information. I will include some information about Marketlinx Solutions, my involvement with the company, and why I feel that students in some of your classes could be the perfect candidates for the position we are looking to fill. Marketlinx Solutions provides web-based database distribution to selected markets. More distinctly, we cater (for now) to the real estate community, writing web sites that allow realtors access to information about houses for sale in their particular area.

Marketlinx does this on a contract basis, customizing sites for many cities throughout the country. We hold contracts with many of the largest realtor boards including San Diego, Nashville, Tulsa, Grand Rapids, Staten Island, and so on. We were the first company to provide this service over the internet, and remain the only company able to support it reliably in proven markets. As such, Marketlinx Solutions has seen significant growth in the last two years. We have just recently moved into a new, bigger building in Farragut and quadrupled our workforce since I started. In short, we are doing well and always looking for eager talented individuals to help in a myriad of areas. I started working for Marketlinx about two years ago. When they hired me I was working in a bookstore in the mall and going to UT pursuing a technical communications degree. The company was very small, consisting of only 6 people who worked on one contract. Marketlinx now has about 20 contracts and roughly 30 employees. I was offered an interview because I have a background in computer science and was eager to learn. I worked part time for a year before graduating at which time Marketlinx offered me a full time job as a graphic designer/ programmer. I am currently the only person in the company who really does graphics, but have lately been involved in a lot of projects requiring more programming.

This means, unfortunately, that a large number of smaller, less critical graphics projects fall by the wayside. Marketlinx is in the process of re-evaluating their product and revamping its functionality and overall presentation. This means that we will need some more help with graphics and layout in the coming months. In particular, we are looking for part time help that does what I used to when I started. Here's a list of what this might entail: --laying out web pages in HTML and related technologies, including CSS (style sheets), XML/XSL, ASP, JavaScript, etc. --rethinking and reorganizing the navigation of the system, suggesting changes that will enhance the usability of our product to the end user --visualizing color-schemes and graphics that present a unified feel for our system --creating graphics from concepts using Photoshop (or similar program) keeping in mind aspects such as load time and web page display Basically, Marketlinx is looking for people who are truly eager to learn and have an ability to put it all together.

Anyone who works here is involved in several facets of the system, and has the chance to take on many different responsibilities. Computer experience is a plus, but we are not looking for programmers to fill this particular position. Instead, we want someone who has a good eye for detail, an ability to revisualize an existing product, and a willingness to jump right into new projects. I remember your Intro to Graphic Design class and how what we did there seems like exactly what Marketlinx is looking for. Also, technical writers seem to have the perfect mindset for retooling an existing document or product.

I would greatly appreciate you presenting this opportunity to your class, or perhaps referring some particularly interested students. I apologize for the length of this email, but I wanted you to know a little bit about where I'm coming from. If you need more information or perhaps a shorter document for presentation that sums up this email, I would be more than happy to get that done. Anyone interested can feel free to contact me and I will provide them with as much information as I can. My contact information can be found at the bottom of this message. Resumes can be attached in an email to me, but less formal contact is absolutely no problem. My boss, Doyal Hodge, will do all the final hiring and financial bargaining.

On a personal note: I have been doing well at Marketlinx lately. I was offered a great raise and am really finding my niche. They usually have me working on research and development projects, designing new features and programming them into the system. I'm about the only person who does this. It's a lot more fun than the normal grunt work of maintaining a system. OK, this has dragged on long enough, you are a busy man. Thanks for your time and attention. Hope everything is going well for you.
