Iktomi and Coyote have long occupied places in the imaginations of generations of people. They have been portrayed as tricksters or culture heroes in various tales throughout many different cultures. Presented here is a story retold by Zitkala-Sa, from "Old Indian Legends", published in 1901. The etext version was obtained through the Gutenberg Project.

Annotations have been provided to give some insight to certain aspects and characters of the tale. The purpose of these pages is to present the reader with a basic introduction to the legendary Iktomi and Coyote. It is not intended to be an in-depth study and analysis, but merely an appetizer to Native American legends and tales.
