- Knoxville/Oak Ridge Community Information Network
- Grew from efforts by social service agencies to communicate
- Developed with university resources and close cooperation with local ISPs
- Free text-based Internet access; Web site hosting for non-profits
- Nearly 1,000 Web sites; SIS has contributed 20-25%
A federally-funded demonstration project
- $500K, Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program
- Now the Technology Opportunities Program
- For the homebound - disabled, ill, or caregivers
- Provides computers, Internet access, assistive technologies
- Provides mentor to help to learn
- Laboratory at County Walk - 12 machines
- Public access and training, targeted at seniors
- Also for CHIPS mentors
