The following list contains information on opportunities available through funds external to the university.

  • A Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in Chemistry is available at St. Norbert College for recent Ph.D.s seeking to develop a record of excellence in teaching and collaborative student-faculty research in a liberal arts college environment.
  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announces program guidelines for the 2008 competition cycle of the DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program. Complete information is available online at http://www.orau.gov/dhsed/. All applicants are expected to apply using the online application. The deadline for submitting an application is January 7, 2008, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.   • The Udall Foundation is accepting applications for the 2009 Environmental Public Policy & Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship. We hope that you will forward this information to qualified Ph.D. students. The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Previously funded fields of study include political science; economics; government; environmental science, policy and management; ecology; environmental justice; regional planning; geography; natural resource policy; and environmental analysis and design. Interdisciplinary projects are particularly welcome. Fellows must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents, and their dissertation research must pertain to U.S. environmental policy.   • The Institute of International Education (IIE) has partnered with the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) to administer its Grassroots Development Fellowship Program. The IAF was created in 1969 by the United States Congress to fund the self-help initiatives of the organized poor in Latin America and the Caribbean and the groups that directly support them.   • Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF): http://www.ithaca.edu/fleff FLEFF is a one week multimedia interarts extravaganza that reboots the environment and sustainability into a larger global conversation, embracing issues ranging from labor, war, health, disease, music, intellectual property, fine art, software, remix culture, economics, archives, AIDS, women's rights and human rights. FLEFF is sponsored by Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY.
  • Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF): http://www.krellinst.org/ssgf/ This fellowship is for exceptional graduate students planning full-time study toward a PhD. in the areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high-energy density physics. low-energy nuclear science, or properties of materials under extreme conditions. Recipients receive payments of all tuition and required fees for up to 4 years of study, $32400 yearly stipend, yearly academic allowance of $1000, and opportunity to complete a practicum at a national DOE laboratory. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent resident aliens. Applicants must apply online at https://www.krellinst.org/ssgf/application.   • A postdoctoral research project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The appointment will be in NRMRL’s Land Remediation and Pollution Control Division (LRPCD). Research will be in the area of application of hydrologic/water quality models for watershed management and development of methods for the estimation of model predictive uncertainty. Applicants should have received a doctoral degree in civil, environmental engineering, hydrology or a closely related field within three years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.   • Elderhostel, a not-for-profit organization providing educational opportunities through travel for older adults is proud to again offer the Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant, a scholarship founded to support future leaders in the field of lifelong learning. The Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant is a $5,000 award presented annually to a student researching later-life learning in any of various disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, education, gerontology, cognitive studies, neuroscience and social work.   • Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF): This fellowship is for exceptional undergraduate seniors or first or second year graduate students planning full-time study toward a Ph.D. in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences with emphasis in high performance computing. Recipients receive payments of all tuition and required fees for up to 4 years of study, $31,200 yearly stipend, matching funds for a computer workstation up to $2500, yearly academic allowance of $1000, yearly conferences, and opportunity to complete a practicum at a national DOE laboratory. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Applicants must apply online at https://www.krellinst.org/csgf/application.   • 2007 Smithsonian Fellowships are available in many fields. The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program offers senior fellowships, postdoctoral fellowships, predoctoral fellowships, and ten-week graduate student fellowships. Also available are predoctoral or postdoctoral fellowships relating to Latino studies. Information about other fellowships and internships at the different Smithsonian Museums, Research Institues, and Offices can be found online at http://www.si.edu/researsh+study. Postmark deadline is January 15, 2007.
  • The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship program is designed to provide support to active Phi Kappa Phi members or prospective members as they prepare to enter graduate or professional studies in the upcoming 2007 – 2008 academic year. The Fellowship program awards $380,000 annually to 100 Fellowship recipients. A requirement of the program is that the applicant may not have earned more than a semester of graduate credits.   • Tutoring opportunities through the University of Tennessee Office of Minority Student Affairs.
  • Graduate-level research opportunities are available for students through programs offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of University Partnerships. The doctoral research grants are to inform HUD's policy and program agenda. Students who have completed all of their academic requirements except the dissertation, or who have completed their first year of doctoral studies may be eligible for awards.   • The Newberry Library Fellowships in the Humanities provide assistance to researchers who wish to use the Library's collections, but who cannot finance a visit on their own. Most fellowships are restricted to doctoral candidates or post-doctoral researchers in the humanities.   • The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation offers a variety of dissertation fellowships to eligible graduate students.
  • Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research are available for qualified Ph.D. students.
  • The U.S. Army Center of Military History Dissertation Fellowships are available for qualified civilian graduate students whose dissertation topic relates to the history of warfare. These fellowships carry a $10,000 stipend and access to the Center's facilities and technical expertise. Information on eligibility, topics of study, requirements, applications, and selection can be found at http://www.army.mil/CMH-PG/CMH/Fellowship.htm. The deadline to apply is January 15th of each year.
  • The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans supports Fellows for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere within the United States. Candidates for these Fellowships must be either (1) holders of Green Cards, (2) Naturalized Citizens, or (3) Children of two naturalized citizen parents. This Fellowship provides $20,000 maintenance and half tuition. For more information or to apply online, visit the web site: http://www.pdsoros.org. The deadline to apply is November 1st each year.
  • The SREB Doctoral Scholars Program offers $15,000 annual stipend support to prepare more minority students for careers in academics. Applicants must be admitted to a doctoral program. Apply by May 1st for consideration for Fall awards. Refer to the website at http://www.sreb.org.
  • Apply for University Programs and Services Fee (UPSF) Graduate Student Travel Funds. Applications are available online at http://web.utk.edu/~gss or may be picked up at the Dean of Students Office in 413 Student Services Building.
  • A Joint Institute of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) offers scholarships to new and recent doctoral graduates in diverse areas of research. For more information you may link here: http://www.whoi.edu/education/.
