Sample Form

Below you'll find an example of a form that can be used when you're collecting tree-ring samples in the field. This form can be used whether you're collecting increment cores or cross sections. Try to fill in as much information about the sample as possible - this will come in handy when you're trying to date the sample back in laboratory.

When collecting samples, each is identified in three ways: (1) the site code - a short three-letter abbreviation for your site, (2) the tree number - usually three digits, and (3) the core letter. For example, GRC004B would represent core "B" from tree number "4" taken at site "GRC."

This form can be imported into your favorite word processor and altered in any way you wish to make your field work a little easier. You may wish to format this for printing on two sheets of paper, which can then be copied front and back. If you have any questions about the form, contact me and I'll see if I can help.

Draw sample from which cores or sections were taken, indicating north direction, slope
angle, location of cores or sections taken, and provide information on location of
local markers (nearby roads, fences) and previous samples taken:

For cross sections, draw each section clearly, showing labels for each piece, so that
the sections can be easily reassembled back in the laboratory:

If possible, attach a photograph of the sample, taken in the field, to help in the
crossdating.
