Work Abroad (Short Term)
The following is a partial list of the various organizations that offer short-term work abroad opportunities. Provided are the general requirements and a brief description. It is important that you visit the websites or talk with a PAO advisor to learn the details about each opportunity. You will find that the pay, fees, travel reimbursements, accommodations, and types of work will vary among programs, so be sure to explore all your options to find the best fit for you.
Provides assistance in locating entry level jobs upon arrival
Countries: Britain (6 months), Ireland (4 months), Australia (4 months), New Zealand (1 year)
General Requirements:
- Full-time US students who are US citizens or permanent US residents
- 18+ years old.
Ireland (4 months)
Requirements:
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident (contact BUNAC for details)
- Must be a current student (at least 8 hours) at an accredited university/college or a recent graduate (one semester)
- Check with BUNAC for date specifications.
Australia (4 months)
Requirements:
- U.S. citizen (Holds a U.S passport/must be in U.S. during entire application process)
- 18-30 years old
New Zealand (1 year- Time allowance is based upon nationality)
Requirements:
- U.S. citizen (Holds a U.S passport/must be in U.S. during entire application process)
- 18-30 years old

Ireland (4 months)
Requirements:
- Full-time college/university student or recent graduate (within 6 months of graduating)
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident (Contact Irish embassy for current regulations)
Canada (6 months)
Requirements:
- - U.S. citizen
- -Full-time college/university student or recent graduate (within 6 months of graduation)
- -Under the age of 31 upon entry to Canada
New Zealand (6 months from April 1st until October 31st)
Requirements:
- U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident (Contact NZ embassy for current regulations)
- Full-time college/university student or recent graduate (within 6 months of graduation)
Americans Abroad: Pre-arranged Training Programs (12 months; more or less may be arranged)
Countries: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Malaysia, Switzerland, and United Kingdom (different opportunities/companies by country)
Requirements:
- 18-30 years old
- Hold a U.S. Passport
- One year work experience or degree that qualifies you for the job
- Non-student (in most cases)
- Conversationally proficient in host country language
- Check specific countries for their requirements
Camp Counselor: Russia
Requirements:
- 18+ years of age
- Experience with children and/or living abroad
- A desire to learn about Russian language and culture(if no language skill you must be willing to teach English as a second language)
Work Experience Down Under
Provides assistance in locating work once in Australia. Time allowance is based upon nationality. Three program options (2 open to US citizens).

Work and Travel Abroad Program
Countries:
Australia (up to 4 months)
Assistance in locating entry level jobs on arrival
Requirements:
- Between the ages of 18 and 3
- U.S. citizens (not permanent residents/Green Card holders)
- Good health
Belgium (1-3 months)
Entry level in various fields (between May and September)
Requirements:
- Between18 to 29 (some employers may set their own limits)
- Working knowledge of French or Dutch -Specific or advanced training in a preferred field for advanced-level internships
- Major in English or education, previous teaching experience and/or Teaching
- English Foreign Language (TEFL) certification for teaching positions
Norway (2-3 months)
Working Guest on a Family Farm Requirements:
- Between the ages of 18 and 30
- Preferably have some farming experience (it will increase your chances of being placed)
- Be able to make a commitment of at least 2 months (3 months is preferred)
- Be independent, flexible, able to adapt to host families' way of life, and enjoy hard work and the rugged outdoors
Au Pair Program
Countries: Germany -France -Spain -The Netherlands. Reimbursements are different for each country.
Requirements:
- Between the ages of 18-25 or 27 depending on host country
- Language skills in Germany and France
- Some childcare or babysitting experience
- 10 months minimum commitment
Alliance Abroad:
Australia (4 months as US citizen)
Work/Travel Program Options: Pre-placement or Self-placement upon arrival with assistance Unskilled positions
Requirements:
- 18 - 30 years old
- Advanced level of English
- Must qualify for receiving a special work visa in Australia*
- Must have travel, medical, and liability insurance for the duration of your stay
Outback Program (1-12 months depending on citizenship) Pre-assigned paid position in rural area Requirements:
- At least 18 years old
- US citizens can stay for up to 4 months
- Advanced level of English
- Valid driving license preferred
England (3-6 months) Pre-assigned positions in unskilled jobs Requirements:
- 18 - 27 years old
- Must be a full-time student taking at least eight semester credit hours, and matriculated in a degree program at an accredited US or Canadian college or university
- Students applying after their Spring semester must begin this program by December 31st of that year
- Students applying after their fall semester must begin this program by June 30th of the following year
