Using Your Scholarships for Study Abroad

Scholarships are an excellent way to fund your study abroad experience. If you currently receive a scholarship you may be able to apply it to your study abroad program. In addition, there are a number of scholarship opportunities expressly for students intending to study abroad.

UT and Other Scholarships

UT Scholarships can be used for any approved academic year UT study abroad program. Some scholarships can be used for summer study, others cannot. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can assist you in determining which of your scholarships can be used for summer study.

Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS) can be used for any approved study abroad program during the academic year. It is not available for summer study. The number of hours that will be applied toward the degree must be approved prior to your departure. See the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for details.

Departmental scholarships offered by departments at UTK may or may not be used for an approved study abroad program. Check with the issuing department to find out if they have restrictions and if so, what those restrictions are. Once you have the information, discuss it with a PAO advisor.

Other private scholarships may or may not be used for an approved study abroad. Check with the issuing agency to find out if they have restrictions and if so, what those restrictions are. Once you have the information discuss it with a PAO advisor.
