Examples of Funded McClure Projects

The projects funded by the McClure Scholarship are varied.  McClure scholarship recipients come from a variety of fields of study; have projects that include study, internships, research and volunteer activities; and, have carried out the proposed activities in different countries.  Following are examples of projects funded by the McClure Scholarship Fund. Awards varied from $1000-$3000.  The examples below provide information on the country of project, major of recipient and a brief description of the activity completed.

France; Political Science.  A six week work/study at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg,   in the Directorate General of the Steering Committee for Equality between women and men.

Jordan; Religious Studies.  Interviews and observation of the struggles that Muslim women face in Jordan.  The recipient also increased Arabic language skills.

Canada; Legal Studies.  Attendance at a two week intensive program at the Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Clementsport, Nova Scotia.  Studies focused on the legal and political aspects of modern peacekeeping, as well as on the interaction of military and civilian components of peacekeeping and humanitarian intervention missions.

South Korea; Educational Psychology.   A study of the differences between American and South Korean middle school students in terms of work and school values.

Russia; Modern Foreign Languages. Undergraduate summer language program for the enhancement of the Russian language and an observation and study of daily conditions in Russia as well as attitudes among everyday people in Vladamir.

West Bank and Gaza Strip; Political Science.  Interviews of Palestinian supporters and non-supporters of the paramilitary movement.

Puerto Rico; Ecology.  A study of bioluminescence in the Puerto Rico Bay ecosystem in Vieques, Puerto Rico  

Ghana; Civil Engineering.  Volunteer with the Volunteers for Peace in Ghana, West Africa.  Activities included planting trees, building schools and participating among other projects.  

Dominican Republic; Modern Foreign Languages.  Researched and interviewed contemporary Afro-Hispanic writers.

Italy; Art.    Study of artistic forms of different cultures and use of these forms to create an art form representative of the deconstruction of social restraints in a way that can be understood across cultures.

Egypt; College Scholars.  Research included the study of the economic, social and cultural factors relating to human rights in Egypt, at the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.  The researcher also edited the English-language human rights journal created by the Cairo Institute.

Israel; Law.  Study at Temple Law School’s summer session at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law in Israel about the peace process through coursework and interactions with ambassadors from Israel, Jordan, the U.S., Egypt and Palestine.

Mexico; International Development.  Participation in a program designed to introduce students to problems facing the Mexico.  The activity formed part of research for a senior thesis which looked at the economic relationship between the United States and Mexico.
Participant also took intensive Spanish language courses and undertook community service.

Germany; European History.  While living in Bremen and Hamburg, this scholar analyzed archival and secondary sources which discussed the interaction between the United States and these two German cities in order to provide support for his dissertation.

Uganda; Geography.  The study of Uganda citizens with HIV in Uganda and how they chose to communicate about the disease to others, including their children.

China; Foreign Languages/ESL.  A study of the status of English teacher preparation programs in China, especially in secondary schools.

Kenya; Ecology.  The study of human-elephant conflict near the Rimoi National Reserve in the Kerio Valley, Kenya.

Romania; Economic Development Planning.  This project focused on the status of a massive scale rural development project in Romania.  The researcher analyzed the existing conditions and gathered data, which had not been done since the revolution.

Portugal; Agriculture Economics and Rural Sociology-Rural Development.  A comparison of sustainable rural tourism development models, projects, strategies, and programs between the Mondego River Valley in Central Portugal and the Big South Fork/ Cumberland River Valley on the Appalachian Plateau.

Brazil; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.  This recipient visited Manaus, Brazil   to plan a spring break trip for an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology course.  She also met with individuals who had knowledge about environmental issues in the region.

United Kingdom; Education.  Participation in a Summer Internship Program at Swansea University.  She observed the production and operation of distance learning programs as well as assessed their benefits to various Welsh communities.  

Panama; Literature.   Research on contemporary Afro-Panamanian authors who revealed the lack of recognition that blacks received for their efforts in the construction of the Panama Canal and the Panama Railroad. 

Hungary; Cultural Geography.  Study at the University of Debrecen, Hungary on the cultural geography of Eastern Europe.   Wrote articles for the Daily Beacon about various aspects of Eastern European culture. 

Mexico; Architecture.   Conducted independent research on the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City as a contemporary piece of Mexican architecture influenced by the Spanish and Indian ancestors.

Slovakia; Theatre.  Acting performance in the Istropolitana Theatre Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia and participation in a panel discussion on the topic of inter-culturalism.

South Africa; Geography.  Research on the relationship of the Cold War Minerals Economy and the continuance of apartheid in South Africa.  Recipient also participated in language tutoring for Afrikaans at the University of the Orange Free State,   Bloemfontein, South Africa.

United States; Law.  Internship with the Democracy Program at the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA focusing on projects related to democratization in specific countries worldwide.

Australia; Anthropology.  Studied the discrimination of the Koori in Southeastern Australia.  

Mali; Economic Development.  Research on the problems that Mali women faced in obtaining   funding for business start ups.  Solutions were developed as part of project.
