Jackson International Studies Scholarship

The Jackson Endowment for International Studies at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville was established in 1981 to provide matching funds for the College Liberal Arts (now the College of Arts and Sciences) National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant. The Endowment is designed to support the many activities and needs that are critical for enhancing the scholarship of international relations and international education within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Scholarship amount: $1,500 for semester programs, $3,000 for academic year programs. The scholarship cannot be applied to summer programs.

Application Deadline: March 15th for the coming fall, spring or academic year.

Requirements:

  • have a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA at time of application
  • be enrolled full-time (12 or more credits per semester) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville at the time of application
  • be participating in a UTK approved study program abroad
  • have completed the sophomore year by the time the study abroad commences
  • be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • be receiving no other scholarships specific to study abroad
  • be returning to UTK for at least two semesters after the conclusion of study abroad.
  • be a major in the College of Arts and Sciences taking courses in the humanities while abroad.

The term "humanities" includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following:

  • language, both modern and classical
  • linguistics
  • literature
  • history
  • jurisprudence
  • philosophy
  • archaeology
  • comparative religion
  • ethics
  • the history, criticism and theory of the arts
  • those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods
  • the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, history and the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.
