Limits to Life-Sustaining Treatment

0. Unstinting aggressive treatment

"Never say die"
"Where there's life, there's hope."
"We can always hope for a miracle"

These are the aphorisms that can lead to unstinting aggressive treatment. In this choice, there are no limits set to what is to be done to extend life and support body systems. We will read about a case of this sort in the GBE reading in this Unit (SEE "The doctor in an overseas hospital").

A limit will be reached eventually, no matter how aggressively we try to stave off death. Each and every one of us will die sooner or later.

I label this choice "0" because it really sets NO limit.

A few years ago, a young man asked a hospital in the midwest not to disconnect support systems from the body of his mother who had been declared dead. He said: "I am convinced that she will come back to life in three days."
