The German Program of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures
will present three films this spring semester
Das Boot: The Directorís Cut
1981. In German with English subtitles. 209 min. Director:
Wolfgang Petersen
In celebration of Wolfgang Petersenís 60th birthday this year, the
German Program will screen the directorís cut of his now-classic claustrophic
film about World War II submarine warfare. Come see the DVD version
of the film that set Petersen on his way to Hollywood where he has since
directed such blockbusters as In the Line of Fire and The Perfect Storm.

Mutters Courage
1995. In German with English subtitles. 88 min. Director:
Michael Verhoeven
Coinciding with the Clarence Brown Theatre Companyís production of
George Taboriís play The Brecht File, the German Program will screen Michael
Verhoevenís adaptation of George Taboriís autobiographical play and novel
about his motherís close brush with fate during the Holocaust. Taboriís
mother was a Budapest housewife who was arrested and placed on a train
bound for the extermination camps.

Stroszek
1977. In German with English subtitles. 108 min. Director:
Werner Herzog
Bruno Stroszek, a former mental patient and Berlin street singer, joins
with a hooker and an aging eccentric to emigrate to the barren lands of
Wisconsin in search of the American Dream. Of the many memorable
moments in this film, you will not want to miss the final scene shot in
Cherokee, NC that includes the infamous dancing chicken.
