GENERAL POLICIES
Required Materials
- Van Horn Vail and Kimberly Sparks, Der Weg zum Lesen, 3rd edition, Harcourt 1986.
- Larry D. Wells, Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik, 2nd edition, Houghton Mifflin 1997.
Highly Recommended
- Harper Collins German-English, English-German Dictionary, 2nd edition, New Standard ed. New York: Harper Collins, Stuttgart: Klett, 1995.
Class Content
You will read five short prose texts out of Der Weg zum Lesen along with reviewing key elements of grammar from seven chapters of the Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik. The main goals are
- to review basic grammar structures in order to foster your written and spoken German,
- to communicate and discuss German texts by speaking in German.
- to write about these prose texts in German, and to move from a sentence to a paragraph level of writing.
- to read German out loud.
Grading Scale
A: 90+
B+: 86-89
B: 80-85
C+: 76-79
C: 70-75
D: 60-69
F: below 60
The Final Grade will be composed as follows:
Homework 25%
Class Work 25%
Weekly Tests (Fridays) 25%
Stammtisch (one time attendance)
2 Tapes 5%
1 Oral Exam (as part of the final) 5%
Verbtest (TBA) 5%
Mid-Term (TBA) 5%
Final (May 8) 5%
The distribution of the percentages reflects the overall pedagogy of teaching German. As you can see the mid-term and final exam are NOT as important as you might think. More important than those two exams are your continuous and steady study at home, and your active participation in class (Both together count for 50% of your total grade). The ongoing preparation at home and your active participation in class will ensure that the weekly quizzes on Fridays will be a good measurement for you of how well you are doing in class. Since reading out loud forms a vital component in class you will prepare two tapes, where you read parts of the prose texts from Der Weg zum Lesen. In addition, there will be one oral exam as part of the final exam. There are no make-ups for the weekly quizzes. Please contact your instructor no later than on the day of the test in case you cannot take the mid-term. A make-up for the mid-term will be scheduled at the convenience of the instructor.
Attendance
After three unauthorized absences, your instructor has the right to reduce the Final Grade.
Academic Honor Code
An essential feature of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the German language program is a commitment to maintaining an atmosphere of intellectual integrity and academic honesty. The university honor statement reads as follows: "As a student of the University, I pledge that I will neither knowingly give nor receive
any inappropriate assistance in academic work, thus affirming my personal commitment to honor and integrity." If you have any questions about what constitutes academic honesty within the framework of this course, please speak with your instructor.
Formula for Success
Students who prepare thoroughly for class (approximately one hour every day) are almost always successful in this course and enjoy it because they stay on top of the material, which allows them to participate actively and fully in class. The participations strengthens their language skills, which, in turn, leads to higher grades. The most active particpants in class are usually the most successful, largely because they are not afraid to make mistakes. Advice: Prepare for class in a disciplined manner, participate fully in class, i.e., volunteer frequently, and DO NOT WORRY about MAKING MISTAKES. Making mistakes is an integral part of learning any language, and they can¹t be avoided.
Extra-Curricular Activities
There are several opportunities for you to pursue your interest in German outside of the classroom:
- A weekly conversation group called Stammtisch meets every Wednesday from 6 to 7pm at the Falafel Hut Restaurant on the corner of 15th and Clinch Avenue.
- A German film series that shows German films with English subtitles.
- A Language Immersion Weekend (Sprachwochenende) on the first weekend in March. Contact Dr. Stephanie Ohnesorgfor more information.
- Two different German TV stations received via satellite in HSS 206 on VolVision Channel 37 (deutsche Welle) and Channel 38 (SCOLA).
- The Internet - A good place to start is the home page of the German Section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at UTK
- Hodges Library carries German daily newspapers and weekly magazines.
Your instructor will provide you with more information during the semester, or consult the calendar of events on the German Department's website.
Advising
It is essential for all students that they be advised, the earlier the better. For those students who want to minor or major in German, please either ask your instructor or contact Dr. Lee (dlee@utk.edu). Soon you will receive further and more detailed information about advising for minors and majors in German.
Disability Statement
The official policy at UT reads as follows: "If you need course adaptations or accomodations because of a documented disability or if you have emergency information to share, please contact the Office of Disabilities Services at 191 Hoskins Library at 974-6087. This will ensure that you are properly registered for services."
