Visiting Speaker
Dr. Robert Holt of the University of Mississippi will be our visiting speaker the week of January 21. He is a hydrogeologist interested in how to determine fluid flow through sedimentary packages, with special interest in the effects of bedding, sedimentary structures, etc.

He will be visiting for Thursday and Friday morning (leaving after a 10:00 am brownbag talk on Friday). Impressively, Dr. Holt is particularly interested in meeting with undergraduate students who might be interested in hydrogeology as a field of study.

Students interested in meeting Dr. Holt should contact Dr. Ed Perfect (eperfect@utk.edu)

Summer Intern Opportunity
The Division of Geology's Knoxville Field Office has an opportunity to hire a student intern this summer. The internship will involve digitizing paper geologic data for use with ArcGIS. Therefore it would involve inputting data into a database and redrawing scanned maps in ArcMap. We would teach the student how to use ArcMap, so no GIS experience is necessary. And to make the job more geologically educational I would include a few one day field trips.

The process involves submitting a State Application to Jo McKee. She said to indicate on the application that it is for a student summer intern position. She thought that the pay is $8.85 / hour. The start and end dates are open. A state application is attached and can also be downloaded from the following website: http://intranet.state.tn.us/environment/dhr/employment/

It is important that those submitting an application send it directly to Jo McKee at the following address. Do not use the state's online application submittal process.
