Another Brick in the Wall
Fall 2009 marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent disintegration of the Soviet Empire. The wall was not made of bricks, but of reinforced concrete, and, no, the seminar is not about Pink Floyd. But we will use artistic material (movies, songs, literature) along with historic texts, to study the bricks (metaphorically) which made up the wall and the world it meant to contain, as well as the anatomy of the wall's crumbling. Glimpses behind the Iron curtain will not be restricted to Germany.
This seminar is tentatively scheduled to meet during Full Session on R from 12:40 pm - 1:55 pm.
Note: Please check the official timetable for the most up-to-date information about meeting times and locations and availability.
About the professor
Jochen Denzler
Dr Denzler studied in Germany and Switzerland. He was working towards his PhD in Math when the iron curtain came down, and remembers the predictions that it could never happen. He joined the Math Dept at UT in 2002. But if all the evening news simultaneously reported that 2+2=4, he would feel prompted to re-check the arithmetic.
