Welcome

First Year Studies 129 Freshman Seminar Program

What do you get when you mix Harry Potter with Zen Buddhism, East Tennessee caves with punk rock, artificial intelligence with mental illness?

You get just a sample of the freshman seminar topics that have been offered in recent semesters.

Freshman seminars are one-unit, pass/no-credit courses that invite you to learn about a subject you’re interested in—just because you’re in college now, and you can! Signing up for FYS129 Freshman Seminar will put you in a classroom with a professor whose interests match yours. Seminars have an enrollment maximum of 18 students, so you’ll get lots of interaction with your instructor and other students. And it doesn’t matter if you know a lot—or just a little—about your seminar topic: You’re there to learn, explore and exchange ideas.

Classes are designed to fit your busy schedule, requiring a reasonable amount of work for a one-hour course. But the academic and social skills you’ll gain from Freshman Seminar will benefit you throughout your time at the University of Tennessee—and beyond.

We are currently accepting proposals for seminars to be offered during the fall 2008 semester.
