The Tennessee Promise Scholarship program is the only one of its kind in the state. Beginning fall 2007 any student who is admitted and enrolls at the University of Tennessee from one of the eligible high schools listed below will receive a scholarship valued at up to $5,800 per year. The Promise Scholarship, combined with the HOPE and other university scholarships, will provide funds to assist with tuition and fees for up to four years (eight semesters) on the Knoxville campus.

The Tennessee Promise Scholarship reaffirms the University’s commitment to diversity and access by its plan to serve students from certain high schools who may not have considered enrolling at the state’s premier public university. Eligible high schools were selected because many of the students face barriers to college enrollment. We have approached the selection process for schools whose students will receive the Promise Scholarship by examining many factors, including the enrollment patterns of students at the University, the number of low income households in the high school area, the lack of a college-going culture at home, and student academic preparation including on-time graduation rates and proficiency on the Gateway examinations in English II and Algebra I.

Although no scholarship application is required for this guaranteed award, the following must be satisfied to qualify:

  • Apply for admissions as a first-time, first-year entering freshman by February 1
  • Be a Tennessee resident
  • Graduate from a Tennessee Promise high school (listed below)
  • Submit FAFSA prior to March 1
  • Enroll as a full-time student
